The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-Nigeria, one of the first in Nigeria and about the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Postgraduate School now School of Postgraduate Studies was established by Statute 21 of Ahmadu Bello University Law established Postgraduate School (now School of Postgraduate Studies) in 1980.
All admitted students pursuing postgraduate programs at Ahmadu Bello University are students of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
The Academic Departments in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria are responsible for the delivery of academic programs as well as the supervision of research activities undertaken by students.
The Colleges and Faculties superintend over the Academic Departments in performing their functions concerning postgraduate studies in the University.
The Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies regulates the academic activities of postgraduate studies in the University while the Senate is the final approving body of all postgraduate academic programs and activities.

The seventeen (17) Faculties offer a wide range of opportunities for postgraduate research in Administration, Agriculture, Arts, Business School, Education, Engineering, Environmental Design, Law, Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Centre for Distance Learning (DLC).
The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-Nigeria, has to its credit over 40 years of experience in the delivery of quality postgraduate education and research.
The Vision of SPGS is to be a center of excellence that provides quality and relevant graduate training in all disciplines promoting competitiveness and production of relevant knowledge of the highest standard that would impact positively the advancement of the society.
The Mission is to create and nurture a conducive learning environment that would develop the capacities and harness the talents of men and women of all races without barriers to socio-economic and political advancement.
Officials Admission Procedure for ABU School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS)
- A candidate wishing to enroll for a Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, MPhil, or Doctoral degree in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria shall apply for provisional admission, through the SPGS.
- Applications for admission for Postgraduate studies shall be made online via the official website: https://spgs.abu.edu.ng/forms/
- All candidates shall supply the names of three academic referees.
- Candidates seeking admission for Postgraduate studies must, in addition, fulfill the general University basic requirements including English Language and Mathematics where applicable.
- The SPGS shall forward the application of each candidate to the Departments through the Dean of the relevant Faculty for consideration and recommendation.
- The Departments through the Faculty/Academic Boards shall forward a recommended list of candidates along with a provisional list of supervisors in each case to the Board of the SPGS.
- The University shall not be obliged to give reasons for rejecting the candidature of any applicant for postgraduate studies.
- First Class graduates of ABU shall be considered for an M.Phil/PhD admission; 3rd Class + PGD qualifies an applicant for Master admission and a minimum CGPA of 3.5 is required for a straight PhD admission.
- Upon admission and registration, there shall be options/choices for flexible payments and registration plans within the allowable residency of postgraduate programs as approved by the University.
- There shall be procedures of admission and registration as determined by the SPGS Board, subject to periodic review.

Additional Entry Requirements for Foreign Candidates
All foreign candidates must satisfy the following requirements, aside the normal entry requirements for every programme, before they can proceed with their studies in the University if offered admission:
Possession of the following documents:
- Admission Letter
- International Passport or ECOWAS Travel Certificate
- Valid VISA/STR (Subject to Regularization)
- Residence Permit
Failure to secure such documents will lead to suspension of all academic activities
Entrance Examinations
Some Programmes REQUIRE candidates to write Entrance Examinations. The dates, venues and times of the examinations shall be communicated in due course.

IS THERE A FLEXIBLE PAYMENT PLAN?
There is a flexible payment plan which must start with 50% of the total fees and be completed to 100% before the 2nd-semester examination.
CAN ONE APPLY FOR A POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME BEFORE FINISHING HIS/HER NATIONAL SERVICE?
One can apply for a postgraduate program a few months before the completion of his service year so that he/she will be able to meet up with the admission.
NOTE: One must COMPLETE his national service before he can be successfully screened into the program.
CAN ONE DEFER AN ACADEMIC SESSION?
Yes, one can defer an academic session provided he/her has fully registered for the session.
CAN ONE TRANSFER TO ANOTHER SCHOOL AFTER COMPLETING HIS/HER FIRST YEAR AS AN ACADEMIC MASTERS ‘ STUDENT?
Yes, one can transfer from A.B.U to another university.
