Prof Yusuf Aboki: The Iconic Professor of Professors.

Prof Yusuf Aboki is distinguished abusite, renowned law scholar and Iconic Professor of Law with a specialization in Nigerian Land Law and Legal Research at the Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello, University, Zaria. He is regarded as a sacred oracle of Nigerian Land Law and a pioneer of Legal Research in Nigeria.

He has taught and supervised an uncountable number of students for many decades amongst whom are several professors, associate professors, Judges, and Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

Prof Yusuf Aboki was born on the 31st day of December 1952 at Ukya, Toto Local Government Area of present-day Nasarawa State.

He attended Junior Primary School, Toto from 1957-1960; Senior Primary School, Laminga from 1961-1963; and Government Secondary School, Abuja from 1963-1968 for his primary and secondary school education respectively.

He proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-Nigeria where he obtained a Diploma in Law in 1976; Degree of Laws in 1980 and Master of Laws in 1985. He obtained another Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School, the USA in 1987 and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, the USA in 1990.

Prof Yusuf Aboki was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. As additional educational qualifications, Prof. Yusuf Aboki did a program on Words Perfect Application Programme at the University of Wisconsin, Computer Centre from 1989-1992; Alternate Dispute Resolution Workshop at Abuja Multi-door Court Center in 2004; and Online Journals Publication Course, at Kaduna State University in 2007.

Prof Yusuf Aboki’s Career

Prof Yusuf Aboki was an Assistant Registrar at the Judicial Department of Plateau State; a Higher Executive Officer, I & J Office, at A.B.U. Samaru; a State Counsel (NYSC) at the Ministry of Justice, Calabar; and a State Counsel at the Ministry of Justice, Plateau
Jos.

Between January 1988 – May 1988, he was a Teaching Assistant in Introduction to African Survey at the Department of African Languages and Literature, University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA.

He became a Professor of Law at the Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria-Nigeria in 2001.

Prof Yusuf Aboki has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students. At the undergraduate level, he taught

  2. Land Law – 1984-1986
  3. Conflict of Laws – 1991 –1996
  4. Land Law – 1991 – To date
