ABU set to build new Ultramodern hostels for Male and PG Students

In a bid to tackle the severe shortage of accommodation in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, the new management is set to begin the construction of new ultra-modern hostel facilities for male and postgraduate students of the institution.

The proposed accommodation which will be situated in ABU PHASE II behind Dangote hostel will accommodate over 1000+ Students and includes modern facilities like independent power supply, ironing, shops, ICT, kitchenette, water, sports facilities, and recreational centers.

This was disclosed by the ABUSRC Secretary-General, Comrade Khalifa Kabiru Andaza in a statement after a meeting between the ABUSRC, ABU Directorate of university advancement, and others on the proposal for students’ accommodation.

The meeting was a follow up to the previous meetings where the ABUSRC president Comrade Abubakar Sadeeq Ali strongly alluded to the fact that there was a gross shortage of students accommodation in the University.

According to Kabiru, the University management expressed its readiness to tackle the accommodation issue even though they believe the university has reached the 30% NUC standard on accommodation years ago.

The Dean of Students Affairs, Prof Muhammad Yakasai Fatihu acknowledge the Accommodation Insufficiency as one of the major setbacks in the university and emphasize the urgent need to tackle the issue.

He listed some of the major challenges in the hostels which will be put into consideration when constructing the new proposed hostels to include; Power failure and water supply. “Water supply, Security, and Electricity are vital for a conducive study and friendly environment for the students.” He added.

In his presentation, the ABUCONS Representative projected the current statistics of the students’ accommodation in both Samaru and Congo campuses as well as the typology of the proposed male hostels.

“The ABUSRC were given the privilege on behalf of ABU Students to choose either of the proposed accommodation that will be suitable for the students. After considering factors like hygiene and security, the ABUSRC President suggested the proposed hostel should be of a similar structure as the Shehu Idris hostel where a certain number of rooms would be allocated with a toilet and kitchen.

“While it was agreed that the Postgraduate hostel will be more of self contain (room, toilet, and kitchen) plus rooms with a toilet and kitchen to shared in case of lesser privileged students who can not afford to pay for the Suit.”

The ABUSRC President salutes the initiative by ABUCONS and the directorate of the university advancement and expresses confidence that this will go a long way in solving the current and future accommodation problems at the University.

In Attendance were the Dean Students’ Affairs Prof Muhammad Yakasai Fatihu, the Director Directorate University Advancement Prof Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, and MD ABUCONS. Others include Dr. Mansur – The presenter, Dr. Mu’awiya Ibrahim, the ABUSRC President Comrade Abubakar Sadeeq Ali, his Vice, Secretary-General, and Chairman Governor’s Forum.
