Professor Adamu Nayaya Muhammad was a renowned veterinary parasitologist, scholar, and university administrator who is the first Northern Nigerian Specialist in Parasitology. He served as the 6th Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria between 1986–1991, and the University of Calabar, 1981-86.
Professor Adamu Nayaya Muhammad was born on February 3rd, 1935 in Jos, Plateau State. He began his educational pursuit at the Elementary School, Jos, 1942-47, and later Central School. Panshin, 1948. He acquires his secondary education at Keffi Secondary School in the old Kaduna state from 1949-54, and the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, 1955-58.
He proceeded to University College (now University of Ibadan), Ibadan, where he studied from 1958-63, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 1964-65, Institute of Tropical and Protozoan Diseases, University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, 1971-73, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1974. Receiving a Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in the process.
Professor Adamu Nayaya Muhammad started his Career as a Veterinary Assistant at the Ministry of Animal and forest Resources, Northern Nigeria (Kano and Kaduna), 1955-62. He served as External Affairs Officer, Ministry of External Affairs, Lagos, and London, 1963-64.
He was a Research Entomologist, at the Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Division, Ministry of Animal and Forest Resources, Kaduna, 1964- 66 before he was appointed a Lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1966 where he rose to become a Professor and Head of the Parasitology and Entomology Department at Ahmadu Bello Zaria from 1976-81.
During his time at ABU Zaria, he was a Senate elected member, Professional Academic Board, Institute of Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, 1974-75; Senate elected member, Professional and Academic Board of Division of Agriculture and livestock Services Training in 1975.
He was Assistant Head, Department of Parasitology and Entomology, 1974; Assistant Dean, Academic Affairs, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, 1975-76; Deputy Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello. University, 1976-77 and 1977-78; Director, University Press Plc, 1994, University of Technology, Bauchi; and President, Keffi Old Boys’ Association, Zaria, 1975.
Professor Adamu Nayaya Muhammad was Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1978; Dean, Postgraduate School, ABU, 1980-81; appointed Vice-Chancellor, University of Calabar, 1981-86 and later Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1986-91.
He served as Chairman, Governing Board, National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, 1976-80; member, Council of the University of Guyana, 1983; National President, Nigerian Society for Parasitology; Chairman, Committee of Vice-Chancellors, 1987-88; Pro-Chancellor & Chairman, Governing Council, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, since 1997.
The scholar has several book Publications to his credit in addition to over fifty articles in national and international scientific journals. His Hobbies included international affairs, reading, and farming (livestock).
The late Professor Adamu Nayaya Mohammed has seven (7) children (5) Sons and two (2) daughters. Among them is The Barden Palladan, Masun Zazzau, and distinguished Abusite, Alh Salisu Adamu Nayaya Mohammed.
The renowned academic died in 2001. May God forgive his shortcomings and have mercy on his soul.
