If you are an Abusite or have ever been to any of the campuses of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, then you should understand that there are different groups of ABU students (Abusites). While people outside the walls of ABU may see everyone going in and out of the school as same, the insiders know, can spot the difference, and are always able to place students in the group they belong to.
First and foremost, not all students on ABU campuses are active students in the university. Some of them are only in school because people expect them to be. This is one of the reasons why elderly ones advise their wards by telling them to pass through school and allow the school to pass through them.
That being said, below are the different types of Abusites you are most likely to meet in ABU:
1. THE PARTY GOERS
These groups of students are always present in every university and Ahmadu Bello University isn’t an exception. As a matter of fact, they are the most popular set of students on campus as people are always talking about them.
They sure must belong to social clubs on campus and can easily be identified with their branded social club Tshirts promoting parties. You can be sure that they would be at a party even when they do not go to school regularly. They cannot afford to miss a party and would rather miss a class. They give more importance to their social events than academics.
2. THE FASHIONISTAS
This group of students simply love clothes and looking nice is their passion. They would spend every kobo they have on clothes and always bother themselves about looking good. The trending clothes and style would first be seen on them and they would rock a style ahead of every other student in ABU. They may not be leading in their class but trust me, you can never beat them when it comes to fashion.
3. THE BOOKWORMS
Abusites in this category are too studious; all they do and want to do is read and read. They do not go out, attend parties or have any form of social life. They would read even when there is no test and the exam is not in view. They do not bother themselves about fashion and wear whatever is available. Their lifestyle is very simple.
4. THE LIBRARY GOERS
These set of Abusites are just in love with either the library or something in the library. Going to the library is what they do every day. Call them “the KIL Community” if you want. If they are not in the class or in the hostel, you can be sure to find them in the library.
Some in this category may want to read ahead of the class. But for the Showmen and ladies, they do this just to intimidate other students. Some just love the library environment and for “ZA ODA GROUP”, they do it for “ALUTA E” reasons.
5. THE STUDENT RIGHTS ACTIVISTS
Abusites in this category are passionate about the affairs of the school and are active members of departmental, faculty or the main student body – The Students Representative Council SRC.
They concern themselves with the affairs of the other students in the university and express their opinions through their association. They are people who are interested in politics and would always contest for one position or the other during the school election.
6. THE ABU MOBIL KIOSKS
These groups of Abusites are dominated by the ladies and are primarily concerned about trade and business. They see the large ABU student population as a large market and a good opportunity to make money.
They sell different wares on campus including recharge cards, snacks, books and other things on the go. They move around with the goods they sell and people know them as a result of that. Some of them end up being traders and businesswomen after graduating from university.
7. THE RELIGIOUS BROTHERS AND SISTERS
The ABU folks in this category have only one source of Joy; Religion. These “Holy Abusites” are so passionate about religion that they can go the extra mile to get things done in the religious centers.
They spend more time in their religious centers than any other place and can never miss a religious event. Every other person who does not conform to their way of life is thought to be unholy while they are the holy ones.
