43rd Convocation: ABU Graduate 25,432 as 182 Students earn First Class degrees

A total of 182 students have graduated with First Class and 3,902 others with Second Class Upper Division at the 43rd Convocation of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, held on Saturday, 27th January.

They were among the overall 25,432 students that graduated during the academic ceremony presided over by the institution’s Chancellor, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, CFR, mni, the Obi of Onitsha.

Also, a total of 11,552 bagged Second Class Lower Division, 2,692 Third Class, 20 Pass degrees, and 275 Unclassified degrees from College of Medical Sciences, as well as Faculties of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.

Of the 6,809 postgraduate students who have also graduated, 647 earned PhDs, 5,167 Masters, 40 MPhil, and 955 Postgraduate diplomas.

Speaking at the well-attended event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, explained that the graduates had earned their respective degrees and diplomas in various fields of knowledge from the institution’s 18 faculties and 109 academic departments for the 2021/2022 academic session.

A one-time Head of Service and Secretary to the Government of the Federation and former Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Ahmadu Bello University Governing Council, Malam Adamu Mu’azzam Fika, GCON, of blessed memory, was conferred with the degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) Honoris Causa, at the occasion.

Others honored included the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammadu Lawal Uwais, GCON who was awarded with the degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa, and Her Excellency, Ambassador Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, who was conferred with the degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc) Honoris Causa.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the University’s honorary degrees, as it is always the case, are only awarded to highly distinguished personalities who have made significant contributions to the advancement of humanity.

Prof. Bala congratulated the honorees for the well-deserved honor and urged them to continue the good works they have been known for.

He equally extended the University’s immense appreciation to His Excellency Mr. Donald Duke, former Governor of Cross River State, for honouring the institution’s invitation to serve as the 43rd Pre-Convocation lecturer.

The Vice-Chancellor was of the belief that the students, in particular, and the entire University community, as well as the general public had immensely benefitted from the lecture, entitled: “This is Your Time: Set Forth in Confidence and With Haste”.

Prof. Bala also used the occasion to inform guests, University community and the general public some of the major developments recorded by the University since the last event which took place on 28th January, 2023.
