Professor Dalhatu Muhammad was a renowned linguist, Prominent Scholar, iconic Abusite, and first-generation Professor of African languages.

Professor Dalhatu Muhammad was born on October 1st, 1942 in Zaria Kaduna State. He Attended advanced teachers college and was among the first sets of ABU Zaria graduates, he joined the prestigious University two years after it was founded in the 1960s.

Dalhatu Muhammad graduated with a B.A in Languages in 1967. He then proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his Masters between 1967 and 1968.

Late Muhammad was in London University, the UK for his PhD from 1974 and 1977. By then he was one of the very few PhD holders in the Northern part of Nigeria.

Professor Dalhatu Muhammad started his teaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Lagos where he works from 1967-71. He worked briefly as an assistant lecturer at the University of Ibadan from 1971-72.

In 1972, Dalhatu Mohammed joined the services of Ahamdu Bello University Zaria as a lecturer. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1977, an Associate Professor or Reader in 1980, and became a Professor of Nigerian languages and culture professor at the department of Nigerian and African Languages in 1983.

The renowned teacher taught for more than 40 years at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. Through his efforts, Hausa was taught in Hausa language at the Universities.
Even after retirement, he remained at the university for several years as a contract Professor.

Muhammad had taught thousands of students. His name and dozens of others are on the ABU wall of fame statue close to the University Senate building at the Samaru Main Campus in Zaria.

Professor Dalhatu Muhammad died on Thursday, 9th April 2020 at Anguwan Juma, Zaria city at the age of 77 after battling an undisclosed illness. He left behind one wife, several children, and many grandchildren.

His publications include the modern Hausa Dictionary published by the University Press, Ibadan, 1977. His Hobbies Include playing Scrabble and Poetry.
