Young ABU Alumnus Appointed to High Profile Harvard Advisory

A young ABU Alumnus and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Built Environment and Development Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr. Hosea Olayiwola Patrick has been appointed as a member of the Harvard University’s Advisory Committee to the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx).

The Advisory Committee advises Harvard University and the SCoPEx research team on the research and governance of the experiment.

SCoPEx, run by Harvard, is a scientific project experiment to advance understanding of stratospheric aerosols that could be relevant to solar geoengineering.

Dr. Hosea Olayiwola Patrick has been appointed as a member of the Harvard University’s Advisory Committee to the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx).

The committee works to develop and implement a credible and sound governance framework for this research project as well as to improve the reliability of simulations (computer models) of solar geoengineering by providing modellers with quantitative experimental results fundamental to addressing specific scientific questions around climate change.

Patrick will serve as a member of the advisory committee tasked with designing the scientific review and public engagement protocol for the SCoPEx research.

The young emerging scholar is currently a research fellow working under the guidance and supervision of Professor Ernest Khalema, Dean and Head of School of Built Environment and Development Studies.

Patrick who is a 2010 graduate of international Studies at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria was also recently appointed an associate editor of the Springer Nature Humanities and Social Science Journal, SN Social Science.

Khalema said: ‘It is an honour for UKZN and for one of its own emerging scholars to be handpicked by such a prestigious university to add solutions to challenging scientific problems. We are proud of him and wish him well in this most recent opportunity, representing humanities and social sciences on the committee.’

Patrick is a transdisciplinary researcher with interests in Public Policy; Environmental Politics; Migration Studies; Security; Peace and Conflict; Comparative Politics; Political Economy; International Relations; Area Studies; Public Administration; Research Methodology; Sustainability Research, and Climate Change.
