A University Don and Professor of Business Finance, Busari Akande has said the incessant strikes and resultant closure of public universities in Nigeria have increased the fortunes of private universities, especially those in neighboring African countries.

Prof Akande said, “The strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is rather good for private tertiary institutions.

“Especially for us that are based outside the Nigerian shores here in French West Africa. Nevertheless, Private Institutions in Nigeria will equally be smiling to banks if they have all it takes to run private universities.

“Private Institutions in Nigeria ought to be the first choice of any Nigerian Student but the reverse is the case. Many students and parents are looking outside the country for quality and timely tertiary education.”

Akande also faulted Nigerian students under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for embarking on public protest all over the country and asking the federal government to meet ASUU demands.

He particularly frowned at the manner the students blocked major roads in parts of the country, blocking innocent road users the right to move about.

“It’s a misplacement of priority. The end-users, who are Nigerian students from lower backgrounds will suffer most. Instead of major roads blockades, They should rather have moved to National Assembly and Presidency.”

On the plight of Nigerian students caught up in the Russia, Ukraine conflict, he vehemently blamed the federal government for not being proactive like other foreign governments which evacuated their students before the conflicts broke out.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria needs to be proactive to emergencies such as what has happened to our students in Ukraine. We don’t need to shout all over social media before they know the right thing to do. Check out India’s positive response to their citizens”.
