Alhaji Ado Yakubu Wanka: Renowned Nigerian Banker
Alhaji Ado Yakubu Wanka is a seasoned banker, highly respected corporate manager and distinguished Abusite who is a former Managing Director of Unity Bank Plc and has worked in some of Nigeria’s major banking institutions such as Citibank Nigeria, FSB International Bank, and Gamji Bank Limited.
Alhaji Wanka is a highly experienced and professionally exposed seasoned banker with over 30 years of managerial experience mainly in Banking and Finance. He has had varied and wide experience in finance and banking having worked in some of Nigeria’s major banking institutions such as Citibank Nigeria, FSB International Bank, and Gamji Bank Limited.
Ado Yakubu Wanka was born on the 6th of January 1955. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering (1977) and a masters in Business Administration (1984) both from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
He is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, Switzerland’s Institute of Management Development, Lausanne, an Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Chemical Society and a member of the Institute of Directors (IoD).
Wanka began his managerial career as a Process Engineer with Ashaka Cement Company Plc where he rose to the position of Deputy Production Manager. After his MBA, Alhaji Wanka joined the Northern Nigeria Development Company (NNDC), Kaduna where he acquired further managerial competence.
He also served as Acting Head, New Business Development Unit and later Head, Strategic Planning Unit at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Alhaji Ado Yakubu Wanka began his banking career in 1988 with the then Nigerian International Bank (Citibank Nigeria) as a Deputy Manager. He moved to the FSB International Bank Plc (1991 – 1997) where he rose to become an Executive Director.

He assumed duty as the MD/CEO of the then Gamji Bank Limited in 1997, moved to FirstBank in 1998 as an Executive Director, where he spent about eight (8) years.
With experience in Corporate and Investment Banking, he served in various capacities in other organisations, most notably as Executive Director, Finance and Administration and Chairman of the Board of the Nigeria and Sao Tome Joint Development Authority.
Alhaji Ado Yakubu Wanka joined the FirstBank Board as a Non-Executive Director in December 2019. He is also the Chairman of APT Securities and Funds, APT Pension Fund Manager and Director, Arewa Metal Containers (ARMECO) Ltd,
Alhaji Wanka is a fellow of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) (NIM), Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSCHE), Institute of Chartered Management Accountants (ICMA), and Institute of Credit Administration (ICA).
Ado Wanka was a delegate to the 2014 National Conference in Nigeria. He loves reading, traveling and is happily married with children.
