The Physics Department, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has received a Partial Discharge measurement equipment from DIAEL in Madrid, Spain, for High Voltage Electrical Insulation Diagnosis. This is possibly the first partial discharge measurement system in any Nigerian university.

Diagnóstico del Aislamiento Eléctrico, S.L.’ (DIAEL) is world leading company that grew out from a research sponsored in 2006 by ‘Unión Fenosa Distribución’ (UFD) in the field of partial discharges which was developed within the ‘Polytechnic University of Madrid’ (UPM) in close collaboration with the ‘Laboratorio Central Oficial de Electrotecnia’ (LCOE).

The exciting news was disclosed by Associate Professor Abdelghafar Amoka who is a lecturer in the Department and one of the leading researchers in the area of High Voltage in Nigeria.

Partial Discharge measurement is the most important technique for assessing the insulation condition of High Voltage systems and provides an effective solution for assessing the reliability of electrical installations.

According to Associate Professor Abdelghafar, “With this equipment, we should be able to perform measurement and monitoring of partial discharges in Engineered high voltage insulation materials, Laboratory simulated high voltage system, High Voltage cables, HV Cable terminations, HV Circuit breakers, and Power Transformers for TCN, and Distribution companies. Partial discharges accelerate failures within high voltage high-frequency power equipment.

“Yes! I desired to have this beautiful but expensive piece of equipment since my return from Norway in 2015 and the dream of having a Partial Discharge Measurement Laboratory comes true and realized in the Materials Science Research Laboratories, ABU Zaria. Thank you TETFund NRF Research grant 2019/2020.”

The Abusites had earlier reported how Abdelghaffar Amoka Abdelmalik has been striving to revive high Voltage research in the university to serve Nigeria’s “ailing” power industries.

Through his contributions and dedication, the department now has a brand new 400 kV HVDC Laboratory that has been put in place to give the team a relatively good working environment for research in the new lab as well as other Labs in the Materials Science Laboratories.
