Professor Isyaku Yarube: The Medical Physiologist Researching Memory Loss
Professor Isyaku Yarube is a physician-scientist and Professor of Physiology who works in the Neuroscience and Pathophysiology Unit of the Department of Human Physiology, College of Health Sciences, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria.
His research has focused on cognitive impairment in diabetes and stroke. His research experience involves investigating insulin activity in the brain, nitric oxide signaling, oxidative stress, and antioxidants, as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
In 1990, while still a teenager, young Yarube left his native Tofa community in Kano state, for Moscow, the capital of the then USSR where he obtained his medical degree in 1997 from the prestigious Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow, Russia.
His education in Russia was courtesy of a government scholarship, having won the 1990 Kano State Government Scholarship for Best Graduating Students to study Medicine in the USSR. Earlier in 1989, Yarube had emerged Best Graduating Student of Science Secondary School Kafin-Hausa in the old Kano State.
Before commencing his medical degree programme, he pursued a remedial course at the Rostov Medical Institute, where he won the Distinguished Student Award at Winter Exams from the Institute’s chapter of the Nigerian Students Union.
Between 2005 and 2008, he pursued an MSc in Human Physiology at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, followed by a Ph.D. (Human Physiology) from the same institution in 2012 – 2016. Between 2009 and 2010, Yarube pursued a PGD (Education) from the Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
He has received additional training in 25 training workshops in different areas, including health research ethics (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative [CITI Program] and West African Bioethics Training Program), advanced research methods, biostatistics, and teaching techniques.

Yarube joined the Department of Human Physiology, College of Health Sciences, Bayero University, Kano in 2003 where he was in 2019 promoted to the rank of professor of physiology.
Until his appointment as Professor of Physiology, Yarube had worked as a lecturer and researcher in the same institution since 2003. He was an associate professor (2016 – 2019); Senior Lecturer (2011 – 2016); Lecturer I (2008 – 2011) and Lecturer II (2003 – 2008).
Before joining the academia, he had worked as a Medical Officer at the Federal Medical Centre, Azare (2002 – 2003) and before then served under the mandatory one-year NYSC scheme at Police Clinic, Jos, 2001 – 2002.
Between 1999 and 2001, Professor Isyaku Yarube did his Housemanship at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital (MMSH) and the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), all in Kano, while between January and May 1999, he successfully sat for the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) assessment examination at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. Between September and December, 1998, he was on a Clinical Attachment at MMSH.
In his over 16 years of teaching and research experience at the graduate and postgraduate levels, he has supervised many Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees; has published 45 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, including the Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences (PSN), Pathophysiology (Elsevier) and Physiology and Behaviour (Elsevier); and has 24 papers presented in about 20 national and international scientific conferences to his name.
He has received several grants for Departmental Seminar Scheme from The Physiological Society (UK). He serves several national and international journals as a reviewer and the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a resource person in the accreditation of Physiology and Medicine programs in Nigerian universities.
Beyond teaching and research, Professor Isyaku Yarube has a rich administrative experience. He served as the Head of Department (2016 – 2018), Deputy Dean of Faculty (2014 – 2016), Sub-Dean (2011 – 2014), and Coordinator for many programs for many years.
Yarube has in the course of his teaching and research carrier worked as an internal and external examiner at various universities namely, BUK, ABU Zaria, University of Maiduguri; Gombe State University, University of Jos, amongst others.
He also served in over 80 committees within and outside the university, including University Senate, Admissions Committee, Appointments, and Promotions Committee, Research Committee, Quality Assurance, Medical Education and Curriculum Review Committee, Mentor-mentee Committee, Dress Code Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Local Organizing Committees for conferences, alumni associations and professional bodies, among others.
He is a member of the Physiological Society of Nigeria (PSN), Neuroscience Society of Nigeria (NSN) (currently serving as the Public Relations Officer and Assistant Secretary-General), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), African Association of Physiological Sciences (AAPS), Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA), International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), The Physiological Society (UK) (currently the Society Representative for BUK), among others.
Professor Isyaku Yarube has won many prizes and awards including Best Plenary Speaker (Physiological Society of Nigeria, KASU 2016), nomination for Best Master Dissertation for 2008, Faculty of Medicine, ABU., Zaria (NUC Awards), Best Graduating Student (Science Secondary School, Kafin-Hausa, 1989) among others.
