NANS, CSOs Declare Support For NYSC
The National Association of Nigerian Students and a Coalition of Civil Society Groups have declared their support for the continuity of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme.
NANS President, Comrade Asefon Sunday Dayo stated this when he led members of the association on a solidarity visit to NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja.
He said the NYSC Scheme, which was established for the youths in the country has been living up to expectations and also contributing to national unity.
He said the future of this country lies in the hands of the youths, adding that the association would mobilize every necessary support for continuous relevance of the Scheme and Nigeria’s unity.
“NYSC is for the youths of this country and we will work closely with you and support the government to make our country great”.
“The future of this country lies in the hands of the youths. We will change the narrative and speak with one voice”, he said.
He added that NANS would continue to advocate for the well-being of every Nigerian student.
In a similar vein, a Coalition of Civil Society Groups led by Comrade Nwogugwu Bright has condemned the call for the scrapping of the NYSC Scheme.
He said the CSOs have been monitoring the Scheme’s activities which have made a huge impact on the lives of millions of Nigerians.
He commended the NYSC for empowering Corps Members with vocational skills that have reduced the unemployment rate among the youths in the country.
“We will embark on advocacy campaigns to canvass more public support for the NYSC”, he said.
In his response, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim said the Scheme in its forty-eight years of its existence has performed meritoriously.
He urged the Civil Society Groups to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of national unity and non-partisanship.
“NYSC in its forty-eight years of existence has lived up to expectations and we don’t want youths that will disunite Nigerians”.
“Our Corps Members are patriotic, dedicated and selfless and if your take NYSC out, our education system at the Primary and Secondary level will collapse”, he said.
Ibrahim said the Scheme is working closely with the security agencies to provide adequate security for Corps Members to enable them to reunite with their children after the service year.
He however appealed to the parents to caution their children against traveling in the night and also avoid actions that could endanger their safety.
The Director-General added that NYSC would continue to tap the potentials of Corps Members to boost its Internally Generated Revenue and also provide employment opportunities for them through vocational skills and in the entertainment industry.
He said more than ninety percent of states in the country have Orientation Camps adding that efforts are ongoing to expand the camps and also upgrade their facilities in order to accommodate the increasing Corps population.
During the visit, Civil Society Coalition for Transparency, led by Mike Femi, and Civil Society Network for Good Governance, led by Barrister Adefila Kamal were in attendance.
