Ahmad Tijani Sulaiman: Emeritus Professor of Solar Energy

Professor Ahmad Tijani Sulaiman is a renowned scholar, respected emeritus professor of Solar Energy and distinguished Abusite. He was President, Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (1982 – 1984 & 2001 – 2003), former Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Yola and University of Abuja.

Emeritus Professor Ahmad Tijani Sulaiman was born on 28th September, 1945 at Ringim, Jigawa State. He attended Government (Barewa) College, Zaria between 1959 and 1963, Kings College, Lagos from 1964 to 1965 for his Higher School Certificate.

He proceeded to the great Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1966 to 1970 where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He obtained a PhD from the Paisley College of Technology (University of Paisley) Scotland in 1975.

Professor Ahmad Tijani Sulaiman’s Career

He was Principal, School of Technology, Kano (1980 – 1983), Director, Energy Research Centre, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (1984 – 1988). He was promoted Professor of Solar Energy Studies in 1983 at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

He was Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Yola and Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja from July 1998 to May 1999. He serve as Commissioner (Higher Education, Science and Technology) from 2004 to 2007.

He has taught in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Kano State University of Science and Technology, Kano; Bayero University, Kano and the University of Maiduguri.

He is a member of many professional and learned societies including the International Solar Energy Society (ISES), Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (SESN), Science Association of Nigeria (SAN) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

He is a Fellow of many societies and was President, Solar Energy Society of Nigeria from 1982 to 1984 and 2001 to 2003. He was a member of several Boards such as the Project Development Agency (PRODA), Enugu, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Chairman, Presidential Visitation Panel to the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi in 2011.

He is currently Professor Emeritus of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He is happily married with children.
