The State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and China’s Ministry of Education jointly initiate the Marine Scholarship of China to provide financial support to outstanding students from the coastal countries or regions around the South China Sea, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans and African, American developing countries to study in China.

The State Oceanic Administration (SOA) is an administrative agency subordinate to the Ministry of Land and Resources, responsible for the supervision and management of sea area in the People’s Republic of China and coastal environmental protection, protecting national maritime rights, and organizing scientific and technical research of its territorial waters.

2022 Chinese Ministry of Education Marine Scholarships

This Marine Scholarship is for a master’s or doctoral degree in oceanography or other related specialties, cultivating advanced professionals of the related fields for developing countries, enhancing international marine cooperation and exchange, and promoting harmonious ocean development in the region and around the world.

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is in charge of the admissions and routine management of the Scholarship.

Marine Scholarship Details:

The ocean, covering about 71% of the Earth’s surface, plays a primary role in addressing climate change and supporting the global economy, trade, and livelihood. Sustainable ocean development has a direct impact on the development and prosperity of all coastal countries now and in the future.

And it has become an inexorable trend worldwide that through international cooperation and exchange we should deepen our understanding of the ocean and promote sustainable ocean development to enhance regional and global economic prosperity.

Under this consideration, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and the Ministry of Education of China jointly initiate the program of Marine Scholarship of China.

About Xiamen University (XMU)

Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is a comprehensive institution of higher education directly affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education.

In 2017, XMU was included in the list of Type A universities designated by the Chinese Government to achieve world-class standing. The University was placed among the world’s top 400 institutions in various authoritative world university rankings, such as THE, QS, US News and ARWU.

Currently, the University has a total enrollment of approximately 40,000 students, including 20,651 in bachelor’s degree programs, 16,712 in master’s degree programs and 4,737 in doctoral degree programs, with 1,208 international students in degree programs.

XMU has an exceptional team for research and teaching in oceanography and marine-related disciplines, being the birthplace of ocean studies and teaching in China.

The discipline of Marine Science at XMU is a first-class national key discipline and has been chosen for inclusion in the Chinese Government’s Program of Building World-Class Disciplines.

Its Coastal and Ocean Management Institute, College of Ocean and Earth Science, College of Environment and Ecology, and South China Sea Institute (School of Law) have made achievements in marine-related scientific research and the cultivation of advanced professionals.

Marine scholarship Requirements:

To be considered for the Marine Scholarship of China, you must:

i. The applicant should be a citizen of non-Chinese nationality in good health, from a coastal/island country of South China Sea, the Indian  Ocean, the Pacific, and its surrounding island countries, or an African developing country.

ii. The applicant must apply for the postgraduate program of ocean-related specialties

iii. Any applicant who is currently engaged in oceanographic and relevant sectors will be given high priority.

Eligibility for Marine Scholarship of China

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens generally under the age of 45 (as of September 1, 2022), be mentally and pysically healthy, and possess a valid regular passport.

2. Applicants should be a graduating student of a bachelor’s degree program or hold a bachelor’s degree or above.

Scholarship Duration and Reward

1. Tuition fee;

2. On-campus accommodation fee oroff-campus accommodation monetary subsidy (RMB 700/month for master’s programs; RMB 1,000/month for doctoral programs);

3. Living allowance (RMB 3,000/month for master’s programs; RMB 3,500/month for doctoral programs);

4. Comprehensive medical insurance.

Note: Other expenses for study in China, such as international travel expenses, cost of physical examination, security deposit and utility costs for on-campus accommodation, and cost of course materials, should be borne by the scholarship recipients themselves.

Duration

  • Master’s programs: 2 or 3 years;
  • Doctoral programs: 4 years.

Application Documents

Applicants for the marine scholarship of China must fill in the application information truthfully in Chinese or English in the application system and upload the following application documents:

  • A scanned copy of the first page of the passport (regular passport, valid through October 31, 2022).
  • Birth certificate
  • Parents’ identity documents
  • Bachelor’s degree certificates or a Certificate of Expected Graduation, bearing the stamp of thee university
  • Academic transcripts for bachelor’s degree studies, bearing the official stamp of the university.
  • Study or research plan: NOT less than 1,000 words, written in Chinese when applying for Chinese-medium programs and written in English when applying for English-medium programs.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation signed by professors or associate professors, written in Chinese or English.
  • Language proficiency certificate: Chinese proficiency requirements for Chinese-medium programs and English proficiency requirements for English-medium programs.
  • CV, written in Chinese or English.
  • Certificate of No Criminal Record. The applicants shall submit a valid Certificate of No Criminal Record issued by the local police, usually within 6 months before the date of submission of the application.
  • Other supporting documents, such as abstracts of published papers, academic activities, merit or internship certificates, may be submitted in the “Other Supporting Materials” section in the application system as well.
Selection and Notification

A comprehensive review will be conducted on applicant’s professional background, academic record, work experience, language proficiency, overall merits, research achievements and their prospective supervisor’s comments.

The shortlisted candidates for the marine scholarship of China will be submitted to China’s Ministry of Natural Resources and China Scholarship Council for final approval.

The final results will be published at https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn in August.

Method of Application

Application for the marine scholarship will be considered only after the applicant has been admitted to Xiamen University.

1. Applicants shall complete online application at https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn   (Program Category: Type B; Agency No. of XMU: 10384) and print out the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarships. The Scholarships Application Form should be completed in Chinese or English and signed by the applicant.

2. Applicants shall complete another online application at http://application.xmu.edu.cn and upload the scan copy of Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarships. There is no need to mail paper application materials.
