At the groundbreaking ceremony of the project at the institution’s main campus in 2016, Professor Ibrahim Garba, then Vice-Chancellor said that independent power generation became imperative for ABU because it could not sustain the NGN 86 million monthly electricity bills.

With an annual enrolment of around 35 000 students, ABU is Nigeria’s largest university and one of the largest on the Continent. It covers a land area of about 7 000 hectares (ha) and encompasses two campuses along with the largest hospital in Nigeria.

The University seeks to address these issues by building a bioethanol factory and solar power plant.

Earlier this month, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad pledged his Agency’s determination to help Ahmadu Bello University overcome its electricity problem.

The MD made the pledge when the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Kabir Bala, visited his office in Abuja yesterday, to seek the agency’s support and collaboration to help the University overcome its electricity challenges.
