Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria will soon begin to reward its academic staff for outstanding research findings and inventions, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabir Bala, has disclosed.

Speaking at a meeting on the way forward for the institution’s Horticultural Garden, the Vice-Chancellor said doing so would tremendously promote excellence in teaching and research at the University.

The Vice-Chancellor, who warned that the University would not in any way reward indolence, also said that ABU had all the potentials to achieve greatness.

Prof. Bala said that the University was in the process of developing a competency-based curriculum to make all its products easily employable in the labour market after graduation or self-employed.

The Vice-Chancellor also stressed the need for a big plantation of commercial trees from ABU Site II to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, saying that the University should equally have at least 20 hectares for the conservation of indigenous trees for research purposes.

The Vice-Chancellor had earlier been presented with a document on the state of the University’s 8.11-hectare horticultural garden by Prof. M. Olu Akinola of the Department of Agric Extension and Rural Development.

The document explicitly explained the structure of the garden, crops grown, observations, challenges, and projections to improve the place.

Dr. Ibrahim Madu Gadzama, Head of, Department of Biology, who was also at the meeting, said ABU was endowed with lands for conservation of indigenous trees for teaching and research.
