ABU, NDA sign MoU on nuclear science training for cadets and students

Ahmadu Bello University and Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration on training and research in nuclear science and technology.

Under the agreement, the University will be organizing a series of training on nuclear science and technology for cadets and postgraduate students of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Specifically, ABU will make a semester provision for NDA cadets’ Industrial Works Experience in nuclear science and technology, materials science and development, health physics and radiation biophysics, engineering instrumentation, and design.

The University will also make a provision annually for training on radiation and nuclear instrumentation as well as application training for postgraduate students of the defense academy.

ABU is expected to provide technical support in developing institutional research capacity in basic nuclear science and nuclear analytical techniques.

In this regard, the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria will organize the research activities and training for NDA cadets and postgraduate students.

On its part, Nigerian Defence Academy shall, among others, be responsible for the facilitation of access to cadets for Cadets’ Industrial Works Experience and postgraduate students for nuclear instrumentation and application training.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at NDA headquarters, Afaka, Kaduna, on Tuesday, 22nd November 2022.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Danladi A. Ameh, signed the MoU on ABU’s behalf, while the Commandant, Major-General I.M. Yusuf, stood in for NDA.

Both the Vice-Chancellor and the Commandant pledged to keep the parties’ respective obligations alive to ensure the sustenance of the memorandum of understanding, which shall be renewed every three years by a mutual written agreement between the institutions.

The Vice-Chancellor, who described NDA as a long-standing friend of Ahmadu Bello University, explained that the pact would further enhance the cordial ties between the two institutions.

In his remarks, the Commandant assured that NDA would play its parts and that keeping the MoU alive would be a “practical demonstration” that the pact would work well.

The Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Sunday A. Jonah, and NDA’s Director, of Linkages and Collaborations, Prof. Ajibuah Joel, all spoke on the agreement, saying that both parties stand to benefit immensely from the pact.

ABU officials, who witnessed the MoU signing, included the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila; Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Prof. Sunday A. Jonah; Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Malam Auwalu Umar; Administrative Secretary, CERT, Malam Aliyu Sule; and Principal Technical Officer and Assistant Coordinator, CERT’s SIWES/IT, Engr. Mohammed Audu Dutsinma.

Those, who attended the MoU signing ceremony from Nigerian Defence Academy, were Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Prof. Yahaya Umar; Director, Linkages and Collaborations, Prof. Ajibuah Joel; and Director, Academy Planning, Prof. Garba Saidu.

Others included Dean, Faculty of Military Science and Interdisciplinary Studies, Navy Captain and Associate Prof. I.R. Sa’idu; Director of Administration, Commodore M.Y. Dahiru; Head, Department of Physics, Dr. G.J. Ibeh; and a lecturer, Department of Physics, Dr. O.O. Ige.
