Kingmakers of Zazzau Emirate are currently engaged in a fresh process to recommend candidates for the office of the 19th Fulani Emir of Zazzau, the Secretary to the State Government Balarabe Abbas Lawal has disclosed.

The SSG explained that the Kaduna State Government directed a new round of the selection process following the cancellation of the initial process, which excluded two interested applicants.

The Bunu Zazzau complained that he was unable to submit his application because he was told that the window for receipt of applications had closed. The Sarkin Dajin Zazzau also protested his exclusion from the process. It was also noted that the kingmakers assessed two candidates on 24th September 2020 without sighting their CVs which the selectors received a day later.

The SSG said that the state government considers as highly irregular the leakage of the report of the selection meeting of 24th September 2020 before its receipt by the state governor.

The kingmakers are now meeting to assess all the 13 candidates that indicated interest from all the ruling houses, including the two that were previously excluded.

The report of these assessments will be swiftly submitted to the governor for his consideration, the statement by the SSG concluded.

The Abusites had earlier reported the death of HRH. Alhaji. Dr. Shehu Idris, the Emir of Zazzau and the Chairman of Zazzau Emirate Council and Kaduna State Emirate Council, at age 84. The revered monarch died on 20th September 2020 at the 44 Reference Hospital around 11am after 45 years on the throne having ascended to the throne in 1975 at the age of 36.

Princes from three of the four dynastic lines of the emirate were initially shortlisted and recommend to the Kaduna state Government.

It was reported earlier in the week that three names – Iyan Zazzau, Bashar Aminu; the Yariman Zazzau, Munir Ja’afaru; and the Turakin Zazzau, Aminu Idris, were submitted to Governor Nasir El-Rufai by the kingmakers for his final selection.

The report stated that those vying for the post were graded on seven parameters.

The parameters and the marking scheme were; minimum qualification (BSc or HND) – 15 per cent; experience as a district head – 20 per cent; experience in public service – 10 per cent; no proven adverse report – 10 per cent; relationship with the public (tolerance/community relationship) – 15 per cent; national award – 5 per cent and physical fitness – 10 per cent.

In grading the three shortlisted candidates based on these criteria, the kingmakers scored Mr. Aminu 89 percent, Mr. Ja’afaru 87 percent, and Mr. Idris 53 percent.
