Profile: An overview of the Faculty of Law ABU Zaria

The Faculty of Law ABU Zaria is situated at the Institute of Administration, Kongo Campus. It is one of the 13 faculties in the University, with four departments namely:

• Commercial Law,
• Islamic Law,
• Private Law
• Public Law.

The faculty has over 50 academic staff made up of several prominent Professors of repute. The Faculty is a very special and conducive place to pursue a legal education because of its exceptional legal training, remarkable students, and incomparable location.

The faculty has produced the highest number of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), the highest number of state chief Judges in the country, and some of the most respected and highly placed political personalities in Nigeria.

Talking about the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) which is the highest judiciary position in Nigeria, Alumni of the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria has occupied this position more than any other law faculty in the country.

Out of the sixteen indigenous Chief Justices that have occupied the top judicial position in Nigeria since independence, Alumni of this faculty have been Chief Justice of Nigeria six times. Twice more than any indigenous university.

The immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad is also an Abusite from that faculty as well as both the immediate past and incumbent President of the court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa and Hon. Justice M.B. Dongban Mensem 

List of Faculty of Law, ABU Zaria Alumni who have occupied the position of CJN

1. Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, CFR. The current Chief Justice of Nigeria. He Assumed office 7 January 2007. Received a bachelor’s degree in Law in 1980. He later obtained a Master and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in 1984 and 1998 respectively. All from this prestigious faculty.

2. Mahmud Mohammed, CON, OFR. He obtained a Bachelor of Law degree at Ahmadu Bello University in 1970. Was Chief Justice of Nigeria from November 2014 – November 10, 2016

3. Dahiru Musdapher. Studied in this faculty from, 1963–1964. In office 29 August 2011 – 16 July 2012

4. Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina-Alu.
He was the 12th Chief Justice of Nigeria. In office 30 December 2009 – 28 August 2011. He studied Law at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

5. Idris Legbo Kutigi
Was the 11th Chief Justice of Nigeria. In office 30 January 2007 – 30 December 2009. He is a distinguished alumnus of the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

6. Mohammed Lawal Uwais
Was the 9th Chief Justice of Nigeria. In office 1995–2006. Studied here from 1960 – 1961. Before proceeding for further studies at the School for Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Aside the Above, around 35% of Supreme Court justices, Chief Justices of state, Senior Advocates of Nigeria are graduates of this faculty.

Moreso, prominent personalities like the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, the current Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, former EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, as well as some of the most senior and well respected legal luminaries in the country are graduates of this prestigious faculty.
