How Safiyyu Haruna broke the 58yrs Jinx in Arabic Dept in 2020

In Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, The Arabic Departments has a Reputation for Not Producing First Class Graduates Since the Inception of the University in July 1962.

However, on Tuesday, January 27, 2020, the University declared Safiyyu Haruna from Mallam-maduri Local government of Jigawa State the best ever graduating student in the department’s history.

This was after Mr. Safiyu Haruna scored a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.73, a feat which no student has ever attained in the 58-years the university has been in existence.

The result was announced on 27th, January 2020 Immediately after the faculty’s Board meeting.

WHO IS SAFIYYU HARUNA

Born on 1st November 1994, In Shirinya Quarters, From the Blessed Family of Mallam Haruna (The Na’ibi of Chief Imam of Mallam-maduri Central Mosque), SAFIYYU started his Primary Education at Tahfizul Qur’an Islamiyya From 1999 to 2005 where he obtained his primary school leaving certificate.

Mallam Safiyu Haruna received his Senior Secondary school Certificates (SSCE) from The Historical School For Arabic And Islamic Studies (S.A.I.S) Hadejia from the year 2005 to 2011.

The young Safiyyu continues his education after he got admitted by the Jigawa State College of Education Gumel and Studied Arabic Medium where he obtained his National Certificate in Education (NCE) from 2012 to 2015.

He proceeded to the Prestigious Ahmadu Bello University Zaria having gotten a Direct Entry Admission into 200-Level to Study Bachelor of Arts in Arabic (BA Arabic) in 2016 where he has set a record by becoming the first Joint Students to ever graduated with a first-class honor degree in Arabic Department in the history of the University sharing the glory with Rashida Sani Maje who scored 4.53 CGPA and emerged as the second all-time best.

The Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar later awarded an overseas scholarship to Safiyu Haruna to study at any foreign university of his choice.

Announcing the decision while receiving the student at the government house, the governor said, “I will personally sponsor you to further your education to any university of your choice overseas to motivate other Jigawa state students to focus more on their studies,”

The ABU Department of Arabic was established in March 2011 following a split of the former Department of Nigerian And African Languages into two distinct departments: Department of Arabic, and Department of African Languages and Cultures.

The Department of Arabic aims at teaching appreciation and conducting research in the assorted phenomena of Arabic language through systematic study and effective usage of the language in its major manifestations including linguistic characteristics, literature, and culture.

Prior to this date, however, the University had for over half a century been turning out graduates of Arabic at its Kano (Abdullahi Bayero College) campus, which attained full University status. The Kano Campus also commenced postgraduate programs during that period.
