Some students of Ahmadu Bello University are shocked by what appears to be the result of final year students of the Department of Science Education in the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.
The screenshots purported to be results of the department were shared by a concern Abusite and former president of Taraba State Students Union TASSU, Comrade Rayyan Baraya, and now trending on social media shows a catastrophic failure rate of up to 95 percent.
For instance, the uploaded screenshots of the results show a catastrophic failure by the students with only eight (8) students graduating out of 192. A breakdown is as follows:
First-class – 0
Upper 2nd class – 1
Lower 2nd class – 3
3rd class – 5
Pass – 0
Fail – 141
Absent – 37
Probation – 2
Withdrawn – 3
Reacting, students of the department and others express their displeasure with the results with many wondering why such a result should be approved in the first place without calling to question the lecturers and management of the department.
Abdul Umar a student in the department said, The results surely did not tell the true story of how much effort and work the students had put in over the past four years. And it is definitely not the true representation of the quality of students in that department… “If indeed they claim that this is our results, the management needs to initiate an inquiry to verify each result and if possible, call on us to defend our individual’s results and I am sure we will be vindicated” he concluded
Umar Faruk Ahmed ascribed the result to the policy of the department. He said, ” …it is their own policy. No matter what you can’t graduate with 1st class, most of our 2(1) are First Class materials. I regret going for BSc. Ed chemistry. How I wish it’s chemical engineering or BSc“
Another Student, Ahmed Babayo claimed that the problem is a general issue in the faculty; “Thank u for putting it out to a wider audience…., 0 is graduating in computer education, 35 people are graduating in chemistry education out of 192, is this wickedness?
According to Yakubu Aikhamis, also a student, “the students of the faculty are among the most maltreated students on campus, in terms of poor timing of lectures, lecture time clashing, and uncertainty of students’ results! Students have to verify if their CO was a real fail or someone’s mistake with each release of results!!“
Meanwhile a lecturer with knowledge of the system, Engr. Faruk T. Faru has called for calm. He explained that the only reason the results are like this is that a few courses were pending at the time the department had to sit to review the results. “This situation is similar for all departments until the results are all out. Unfortunately/fortunately there are deadlines for second-semester results that have to be met, especially with convocation coming up. This will ensure other lecturers tidy up their part quickly.”
A prominent professor in the faculty who described the results as “an academic embarrassment” has decided to take up the issue with the faculty authorities.
