Professor Musa Borodo, FMCP, PNMG, a distinguished Abusite and professor of Medicine at Bayero University Kano is a former President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

Who is Professor Musa Borodo?

Professor Musa Muhammed Borodo, a Kano state indigene, was born at Bukuru near Jos Plateau state on 22nd of June 1952, where his parents had resided for many years.

After primary education at Bukuru and Gyel LEA schools (1960-1965), he proceeded to Provincial Secondary School Kuru (1966-1970) where he obtained Grade I WAEC certificate in 1970 and thereafter obtained his higher school certificate (HSC) from Government College Keffi, now Nassarawa state in 1972

Professor Borodo was privileged to get admission simultaneously to study Medicine at the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1973; and opted for the later university where he graduated with MBBS in 1978.

After House job at Jos General hospital and Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano, he proceeded to Ondo State for NYSC, where he served as the Medical Officer in charge of Methodist Maternity Hospital Ikole-Ekiti in 1987.

Professor Musa Borodo was appointed as a Medical Officer I by Health Services Management Board Kano State in 1981 and was immediately sponsored on in-service training, as one of its pioneer honorary resident doctors to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria (1982-1986) where he obtained Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College (FMCP) with specialization in Gastroenterology in 1986.

During his residency training period, He was sponsored by the Kano state government on one-year attachment in the department of gastroenterology of St Bartholomew’s Teaching hospital London in 1985 where he obtained a certificate in Hepatology from Kings College teaching Hospital London.

From 1987 to 1990 Professor Musa Borodo worked at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano as Consultant Physician and subsequently as senior consultant and head of Department of Medicine.

In November 1990 Professor Borodo transferred his services to the then newly established Bayero University Medical School Kano as Senior Lecturer and Pioneer head of Medicine, a post he occupied until 2010. He became the foundation Nigerian Dean of the Medical School from -1992—1996.

In this new position, Professor Musa Borodo was tasked with curriculum and infrastructural development, staff recruitment, and seeking NUC and the MDCN accreditation for various levels of the new medical school.

He was promoted to Reader in Medicine in 2010 and a Professor of medicine and Some of the other positions held by Professor Borodo in the university included Membership of Honorary degree award committee, University Senate, and Governing Council, and Chairmanship of Health services and Security committees.

Professor Borodo has served the National Postgraduate Medical College in various capacities including Kano Center coordinator for The Primary  Fellowship exams, Member  Faculty Board of Internal Medicine, Examiner for Parts 1 and 2 exams, and Chairman gastroenterology subspecialty.

He was also Chairman Faculty Curriculum Review Committee, Third Member of Senate, Chairman Faculty of Internal Medicine, Editor, National Postgraduate Medical Journal, Member of College Docimology Committee, Member of College Finance and General Purposes Committee, and a Member of the College Governing Board.

He is a former College Vice President and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Credential & Fellowship Awards.

Professor Musa Borodo has supervised more than 25 dissertations in Internal Medicine for the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians.

He has so far published more than 100 peer reviewed papers in national and international journals, authored multiple monographs and Technical reports and presented hundreds of papers/Guest lectures at national and international conferences.

He was a member of the National Non communicable Diseases (NCDs) committee that determined the national burden and risk of NCDs.

His major areas of research interest include Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases, Viral Hepatitis, Medical bioethics, and Medical education. He has served as an external examiner for the MBBS programs in universities of Jos, Maiduguri, Sokoto and ABU Zaria.

He has also served as Medical and Dental council’s external examiner for the Council foreign graduate exams, as well as accreditation of the MBBS in several medical schools.

Professor Musa Borodo is a member of several professional societies. He was the National President of Diabetic Association of Nigeria, President of Nigerian Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Editor of the Nigerian journal of basic and clinical Sciences, Editor, Diabetic Link and Care.

He is a Member, Board of Trustees of Medical and Dental Consultants of Nigeria, Member, Board of Trustees Diabetic Association of Nigeria, Member, World Gastroenterology Organization, Member ,Africa and Middle East Gastroenterology and Hepatology,  Member British Society of Gastroenterology and chairman Ethics and discipline ,NMA, Kano state chapter.

Professor Borodo is honored to have some edifices named after him, including “ Dr. Musa Muhammed Borodo Street” in Kano, Musa Muhammed Borodo’’ Male Medical Ward” at Aminu Kano teaching hospital Kano and  “ Musa Muhammed Borodo’’  Medical Student, Hostel, Bayero University Kano.

He was a member of the Zakka commission and Sharia commission, a member of Inuwar Kano, member Kano Professional Forum, leader of the coalition of Ulama and NGOs, and Amir of Hudaybiyya Foundation Kano.

Professor Musa Borodo is well travelled and has been to many countries all over the world in all continents except Australia
