Professor Martins EMEJE [B. Pharm, PhD, NCE, ADPM, FCAI, FPSN] is a Pharmacist and a distinguished Professor of Drug Delivery/Nanomedicine in the department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Raw Materials Development (PT&RMD) at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical research and development.

He was head, Ultra-Modern Biology/Chemistry laboratory and the Institute’s only spin-off company, NIPCO Pharmaceuticals Limited during which the Institute’s first indigenous herbal antisickling medicine was licensed to an indigenous pharmaceutical industry.

Prof Martins Emeje’s memo to TMC requesting the establishment of a nanotechnology unit was approved in 2012, and he has remained the head since then. He also pioneered the establishment of the Institute’s Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office (IPTTO) as well as the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC).

Professor Emeje is the immediate past National Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in Academia (NAPA); the umbrella professional association of all pharmacists who undertake teaching and research in Nigerian universities and NIPRD; at this time, he midwifed the discovery, development and launch of the first herbal cough syrup in Nigeria.

He is also the immediate past president of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology Cooperative, Thrift and Credit Society; during which he initiated a skills acquisition program that saw about 800 Civil Servants trained.

Martins Emeje who graduated with distinction from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1998, obtained his Masters and doctoral degrees in Pharmaceutical Technology and Industrial Pharmacy from University of Nigeria between 2005 and 2009, where he obtained the best PhD thesis award.

He had two separate post-doctoral training in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology as well as Nanoscience respectively from Tezpur University and National Chemical Laboratory both in India from 2010 to 2012. In 2014, he completed an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management from Walden University, USA.

He had earlier obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, graduating as the overall best student and coasting home with nine (9) prizes and automatic scholarship; he became a registered Pharmacist in 1998.

He started his research career in 2001 as a Junior Research Fellow in the department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Raw Materials Development, and has been an adjunct lecturer with University of Uyo since 2009.

For over 15 years, Emeje has focused on creating an understanding of the molecular behavior of polymeric materials and the compaction properties of pharmaceutical powders, excipients and active pharmaceutical ingredients including the physico-mechanical properties of drug formulations using these substances.

Having conducted several research projects in herbal pharmacotherapy, herbal formulation, compaction characteristics of pharmaceutical powders, and excipient characterization, his expertise focuses on the development of solid oral dose formulations for immediate- and sustained- release applications and the physical properties of polymer-polymer and polymer-drug interactions.

The outcome of his research has made him discover wide array of naturally occurring raw materials that could be harnessed as excipients suitable as carriers in drug delivery and the outcome further generated his interest in pharmaceutical nanotechnology and nanomedicine with respect to applying these nanomaterials in medicine.

In this respect, he has undertaken extensive molecular solid-state characterization and application of natural polymers in nanomedicine for the targeted delivery of challenging conventional drugs such as metformin and insoluble bioactive agents. Emeje patented the first starch-engineered nanodrug delivery system in Nigeria.

Professor Martins Emeje is a recipient of over 20 fellowships, awards and grants all over the world including the prestigious Raman Fellowship; Research Scholar, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore and the Centre for Co-operation in Science & Technology among Developing Societies (CCSTDS); and International Scholar, Poona College of Pharmacy.

Professor Emeje is a recipient of local and international grants and awards; A Co-Principal Investigator for WHO/ANDI grant on Co-formulation of NIPRISAN with routine antimalarial drugs; Principal Investigator for American Cancer Society grant for Oral morphine solution; Principal author of the 365 million naira Japanese grant for use of specialized equipment for the development of products for malaria, diabetes and tuberculosis.

Professor Emeje is a member of many national/international organisations such as the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC), American Chemical Society (ACS), American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), Society of Ethnobiology (SoE), West African Health Research Network (WANNPRESS), Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in Academia (NAPA).

Prof Martins Emeje is enlisted in the World Who’s Who and the International Biographic Congress, London. In 2016, Emeje was listed among the 2000 outstanding scientists of the 21st century.

He serves as a Board member of the first private medical university; Institute of Medical Sciences Africa; a medical university devoted to the postgraduate training of medical and health professionals. He is a fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration as well as the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.

He has over 150 publications including patents, trademarks and media mentions. He has taught and mentored many undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has also supervised several Masters and PhD student projects and currently a postgraduate supervisor of international students of De-Montfort University, Leicester, UK and a visiting professor to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Professor Martins Emeje is presently on sabbatical at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), where he is working directly with the Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye on developing standards for use of drugs in livestock management.
