Legendary Prof. Kryszstof SCHOENEICH of ABU is dead

The Abusite have received news of the death of legendary ABU Professor Kryszstof SCHOENEICH who recently retired from the services of the University and left Nigeria for good to his home country of Poland.

According to family sources, the Emeritus professor of hydrogeology in the Department of Geology, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria died on the 4th of September at his home in Warsaw, Poland.

Prof Schoeneich who had been in the university system since 1955 was an Icon in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and a legend in the field of Geology in Nigeria and Beyond.

Confirming the news of his death, a staff of the department of Geology Jamilu Halliru Yashe said, “This is to announce the sad news of the passing away of the Greatest Mentor, Prof. Kryszstof SCHOENEICH on the 4th of Sept. At Warsaw, Poland. Please my condolences to the Whole Geology Family.

“His son emailed The Head of Department, Geology this evening to confirm the sad story. History will be kind to the principled Prof who staged a solo protest against cutting down Trees in ABU Zaria main campus, Samaru. Go, easy Prof.”

Professor Kryszstof SCHOENEICH was born before the last world war, precisely in the year 1932. He entered university in 1950 and graduated as Master Science in 1955 and Thereafter was granted a Doctoral Degree in 1963.

Since 1955, he has worked with two universities in Poland and two universities in Nigeria. In Poland, he worked at the Department of the Geology University of Warsaw; And later at the Department of Geotechnics and Soil Mechanics at the University of Szczecin.

In Nigeria, he worked at the Department of Geography and Planning in the University of Jos and later at the Department of Geology, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Here, at Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Zaria, he worked from 1978 on a part-time basis, and since 1997 on full time to 2020.

While working at the universities in Poland, he worked in industries, at the same time, in water supply, drilling boreholes, or in waterworks providing piped water to the consumers.

In 1978 when a team from the Federal Government of Nigeria went to Poland to recruit specialists in various areas; among them was Professor Cornelius Kogbe, who was at this time the Head of  Department of Geology, ABU Zaria and at the same time, He was also a member of the Board of Directors at Plateau State Water Board in Jos.

Professor Kryszstof SCHOENEICH was engaged on full time at Plateau State Water Board as Chief Hydrogeologist and at the Department of Geology Ahmadu Bello University on part-time as a lecturer in Hydrogeology and Water Resources Management.
