Prof Ibrahim Garba: The 14th Vice-Chancellor of ABU Zaria

Professor Ibrahim Garba is a renowned Nigerian Professor of Geology and 14th Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He succeeded Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, a Professor of Medicinal chemistry.

Born on February 25, 1957, in Riruwai, Doguwa local government area of Kano state Professor Garba had his first degree (B.Sc. Geology) in 1980 and a second degree (M.Sc. Mineral Exploration) in 1985 at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He earned a Ph.D. (Geology) in 1993 at the University of London but had earlier obtained a Diploma in Mineral Studies at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine, London, in 1992.

Aside from the various positions he had held at federal and state ministries, Professor Garba has served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil. He has also served as head of the department of the ABU’s Department of Geology, among many other positions.

Prof Garba also served as an Adviser to the Republic of Guinea, supervising the implementation of mining sector reforms.

Prof. Garba worked on secondment at the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Abuja as Director-General, Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office where he Spearheaded the development and implementation of the Mining Cadastre System in Nigeria.

It’s is on record that while serving as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, he record several tremendous achievements which include splitting the old Faculty of Science into faculties of physical science and life sciences.

The former houses departments of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science and Geology. With the unbundling of Biology, departments of Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, and Microbiology were produced.

He also created the departments of Communication Engineering, Automotive Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering as well as moved the Textile Science and Technology from the old Faculty of Science to the Faculty of Engineering.

Also, he championed and implemented the successful 3+2 programme – a collaboration between ABU and Central South University of China making it possible for ABU students to earn degrees of ABU and CSU simultaneously. This is the first of its kind in Nigeria.

It was also during the vice chancellorship of Professor Ibrahim Garba that the old Faculty of Medicine was elevated to a college, thus housing faculties of Allied Science, Clinical Science, and Basic Clinical Sciences.

The college is now under the supervision of a provost appointed by the university administration. Undergraduate programmes in Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, and Dental Surgery were also introduced.

In the area of infrastructure, Professor Ibrahim Garba did an excellent job. Two new hostels were built by the Dangote Group and the Federal Government of Nigeria respectively. Computer Science, Glass Technology, Architecture, Building, and Mass Communication have new buildings in the new site.

The multi-billion Naira Ahmadu Bello University Business School built by the Central Bank of Nigeria was also completed and commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Professor Ibrahim Garba signed multiple MoUs with government agencies for the introduction of specialized courses.

The renowned Professor of Geology has to his credit numerous papers in local and international journals, apart from other publications.
