Danladi Slim Matawal is a distinguished abusite, a renowned Nigerian professor of Civil engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical & Foundation Engineering. He is the Director-General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI).
Prof. Danladi Slim Matawal was born on 30 October 1955 in Bokkos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He attended elementary school at Nigeria Army Primary School, Plateau State where he got his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1968 taking 1st position.
He attended Government College, Keffi, Nasarawa State where he obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1968. He later proceeded to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he obtained a Bachelor of engineering (B.eng) degree in Civil engineering with a First Class Honour (1974-1978).
In 1980, he obtained a Commonwealth scholarship to study at the Imperial College, University of London, where he obtained a Master of Science (M. Sc) in Civil Engineering (1981) and a Doctorate degree, Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Lagos (1992).
Prof. Danladi Slim Matawal’s Career
Prof. Danladi Slim Matawal worked as a Senior Engineer with Etteh Aro & Partners Consultant Engineers saddled with Design, Supervision & Construction of Roads, Water Supply schemes, Building & Structural schemes and Drainage works in 1978-1983.
He joined the services of Plateau State Polytechnic as a director of works in 1983 but left the Plateau State Polytechnic in 1987 to join the services of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi as a Lecturer II in the Department of Civil Engineering where he was later appointed a Professor in 1999.
In 2000, he was appointed as Director of Centre for Distance Learning Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University for 4 years, a tenure that ended in 2004. After he left office as Director of Centre for Distance Learning in 2004, he was immediately appointed as Dean of Engineering and Engineering Technology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, a position he held for 4 years (2004-2008).
After his tenure as Dean of Engineering and Engineering Technology, he was appointed as Dean of Postgraduate School Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. He held the position for 3 years (2008-2011).
In 2011, he was appointed as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Building & Road Research Institute (NBRRI), an agency under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.
Prof. Danladi Slim Matawal has held national and International Services across the globe and his major academic contributions are in the areas of works on Numerical Instability problems in structural mechanics, Pozzolana Cement with applications to produce Sandcrete blocks; designing water purification systems for using Olefeira Moringa Powder.
He also designed and fabricated the Reinforced Earth Compactor and Rammer, and currently emphasizing on Mitigation of Incessant Building Collapses in which he has pioneered 10 interventions and technical reports in 2011 and 2012. He received the Raw Material Research & Development Agency Award in 2006. He has written many books and published several journals.
As a scholar, he has many publications, Seminar and Conference Papers, Productive works as well as articles on professional issues. He has, also, attended seminars and workshops locally and internationally. He has been an external examiner to several Universities which cut across private, states and federal. He was inducted into the Nigerian Construction Hall of Fame in 2013.
Prof. Danladi Slim Matawal has a lot of awards to his credit. He has been Chairman and member of several boards and committees over the years. He is happily married with children.
