The National Association Of Nigeria Students, NANS, has declared its full support for the planned protest by concerned tertiary students to allow campuses to resume with health protocols.

This is coming at a time where many Nigerian students are expressing their eagerness to resume lectures, considering a lot of factors that have continued to affect them morally, financially, and academically.

The coordinator of NANS Zone A, Comrade Zakari Hashim CNS, in an exclusive interview with Campus Catch on Sunday, said agitating for schools to reopen is a welcome development and NANS will provide full support.

“It is a welcome development. You have my support. The Federal Government should announce a date. They should also reach an agreement with ASUU before resumption”, he said.

Comrade Zakari also emphasized that isolation centers should be located at every federal Institution to monitor suspected cases.

Asked if he was aware of the recent demands by NANS which are the declaration of free academic year to all Nigerian students, provision for food items, and payment of study allowances to students of tertiary institutions, he confirmed that truly, those are also pending demands for the government to grant upon resumption.

A group of “concerned tertiary students” have recently called for a nationwide protest to compel the federal government to reopen schools across the country which have been closed since March as a preventive measure against the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the government of the Federation and Chair of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Pupils, and students will have to wait a bit longer at home because schools cannot reopen immediately.

He cited the need to protect the vulnerable and halt the spread of the virus in communities as reasons. He said the government is worried about the rising cases of the virus pandemic in the country.

Mustapha described school resumption as “delicate” since Nigeria had entered the phase of community spread of the virus.

He said Nigeria should pursue a strategy that will aid the sustainable control of the spread of the disease, adding that communications and community engagement should remain a top priority, while the precision approach to containment and management should be adopted.

On his part, the PTF Coordinator Dr. Sani Aliyu said Nigerians had not reached the peak of infections. He described the fight against the virus pandemic as long-drawn.

He said the PTF was working closely with the Ministry of Educations to work out a resumption plan for schools since the majority of students may be living with the vulnerable group of Nigerians.

He said the plan may be to allow those who are supposed to write examinations to do so, saying “we don’t want what has happened to affect the next academic session”.
