What is JAMB

JAMB – Joint Admissions Matriculation Board Exam is a governmental body in charge of admissions in Nigeria and is the body that moderates, regulates, conducts and is in charge of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exams (UTME).

The UTME is conducted every year after which successful candidates are to participate in a screening test called POST-UTME. The Post-Utme test is held in various Institutions across the nation. After which results are released and qualified candidates are offered admission on merit.

What is IJMB

JAMB, IJMB and JUPEB

IJMB means Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMB). Established in the year 1976 by the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA), it is approved, proven and moderated by Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and runs in various accredited tertiary institutions and affiliated study centres nationwide.

IJMB is designed to provide opportunity for candidates who cannot gain admission to regular degree programmes in Nigerian Universities especially as a result of failure in JAMB (UTME), deficiency in O’level paper or other reason. Even, candidates with awaiting results can also apply for the IJMB programme. IJMB is a nine (9) month A’level exam that qualifies candidates for 200L admission.

What is JUPEB

JUPEB stands for Joint Universities Preliminary Examination. JUPEB is a national examination body approved by the federal government of Nigeria in December 2013. It was given full accreditation in April 2014 by the conglomerate of (10) partnering universities led by the University of Lagos. It is a newly approved, proven and certified Advanced Level examination moderated by the University of Lagos.

It has a coordinating body in various partnering tertiary institutions and different affiliated study centres throughout the federation. JUPEB is also designed to give opportunity to candidates who are unable to gain admission to regular degree programme in the Nigerian universities for one cogent reasons or the other.

IJMB and JUPEB: Similarities

  • Both IJMB and JUPEB programmes are fully accredited by the council of Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) as an advanced programme for Direct Entry admission into 200level.
  • Both programmes offers student’s admission into 200level to any department in Nigerian universities that accepts it upon successful completion.
  • Both IJMB and JUPEB are run within a year academic calendar, approximately (9-12months) divided into two (2) semester.
  • Both programmes are open to all interested candidates nationwide and any course can be offered be it Science, Art or Social science..
  • Unlike JAMB, IJMB and JUPEB certificate does not expire, but its not for job, it’s strictly for admission into 200L in the University.
  • Both programme can be done at various accredited institution or affiliated study centres nationwide, while the final exams and certification comes from the moderating bodies.. Prospective applicants are to undergo only a combination of 3 subjects that will suit the course of their choice..
  • The grading of both programme is on points and it goes thus
  • A=5 points, B=4 points, C=3 points, D=2 points E=1 point while F=0 point and 1 free point provided if you don’t have any F in the result, and the total of the grading is over 15points. And much more!

Differences between IJMB and JUPEB

Ever wonder why there is comparison between the two programmes when they are actually paramount to the successful pursuit of students. Well, they are both good but there is no way one will not be at favour than the other. Take a look at our analysis below;

1. Fees: Talking about the fees, IJMB fees is relatively cheaper than JUPEB as the cost of studying for IJMB anywhere in Nigeria can go up to N150, 000 or more in some institutions. While the cost of JUPEB is way more than that. In addition, application form for IJMB can be less than N10, 000 while that of JUPEB is above N15,000.

2. Moderating Bodies: IJMB is under the control of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria while JUPEB is being moderated by the University of Lagos, however both certificate can be used for any of its affiliated universities.

3. Popularity: In terms of Public awareness, IJMB is a well known programme all over the federation that has built trust especially because of its long time existence since 1976. In fact, a vast majority of Nigerians did the programme during their undergraduate days in the 70’s, 80,’s and 90’s even till date. Where as JUPEB is a newly introduced programme, less than 5years, that just came to existence.

D. Examinations: IJMB examinations are usually conducted every February yearly while JUPEB is done in May/June every year.

E. Acceptability: Finally, we are pleased to inform you that IJMB is accepted in more than 80% of all universities in Nigeria, while JUPEB is accepted only in JUPEB affiliated universities.

However, it’s worth saying that, before venturing into any of the two programmes, candidates must consider financial strength of his/her parents or guardians, the institution you wish to attend after the successful completion of the programme and lastly, the location where you are to receive lectures.
