Saratu Iya Aliyu: 20th National President of NACCIMA

Hajiya Saratu Iya Aliyu is a seasoned professional, teacher, trainer, farmer, general merchant, and distinguished abusite whose watchword is exemplified by hard work and excellence.

She is the 20th National President of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA). The first female from the northern part of Nigeria to attain such height and the second female president of the national body, taking over from the first female President, Iyalode Alaba Lawson.

Hajiya Saratu Iya Aliyu was born on September 24, 1948 in Lagos Nigeria. Hajia is married to Nuhu Aliyu Labbo, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of police and former senator of the federal republic of Nigeria who represented Niger North senatorial district of Niger State from May 1999 – May 2011. She graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna state Nigeria with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.

Saratu has served NACCIMA in various capacities for over two decades and is the immediate past chairperson of the Coalition of Northern States Chambers of Commerce.

She was a lecturer at the Kaduna State Polytechnic and Ahmad Bello University Zaria. She also served as the Chairperson of Job Creation and Sustainable Livelihood, a UNDP-assisted program; Commerce Vice President, Nigeria American Chamber of Commerce, Kaduna chapter, and Vice-Chairman, Agricultural Trade Group of Kaduna Chambers of Commerce.

She was also a co Member, UNDP Stakeholders Board on job Creation and Sustainable Livelihood, Kaduna; Member, Coordinating Unit of Poverty Eradication Programme in Kaduna; Member, Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC); Member, FEAP Stakeholders Board; Treasurer, Nigeria Niger Chamber of Commerce, among several other positions of responsibility.

She has also attended several leadership fora, conferences and seminars both nationally and internationally, including World Conference of Women Heads of Entrepreneurs in Brussels, Conference of Women Heads of Organisations in Washington DC, Seminar for African Chambers of Commerce in Beijing, China, Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), Jakarta, Northern Economic Summit, National Workshop and Promotion on Agricultural Machinery and Post-Harvest Technology and Leadership Forum in Ota.

Hajiya Saratu Iya Aliyu’s passion for the development of women is seen in her commitment and involvement with different women groups.

She was President of Police Officers Wives Association Yola chapter, President of Police Officers Wives Association Kaduna chapter, President Public Officers Wives Association Yola, Vice President Retired Armed Forces & Police Officers Association, Treasurer Forum for African Women Educationists and Life Member, Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria amongst other associations.

Hajiya Saratu Iya Aliyu’s Awards and honors

Awards and honors in recognition of Aliyu’s achievement, dedication and service to humanity, peace, and unity include the “Paragon of Excellence & Impetus for Greater Services to our Fatherland” by Abubakar Tafawa Foundation and “Ambassador for Peace” by Inter-Religious & Interactional Federation for World Peace.

Hajiya Saratu Iya Aliyu, who is the MD of Sarat Group of Companies becomes the 20th National President of Nigerian Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines & Agriculture (NACCIMA) at an investiture and inauguration ceremonies during NACCIMA’s 59th AGM in Kaduna, Nigeria On 16th May 2019. Becoming the 1st female Northerner to take on the leadership of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines & Agriculture (NACCIMA).
