Meet Farida Zakariya: The first graduate of a Nigerian University to earn a McCall MacBain Scholarship

Faridahttps://www.theabusites.com/farida-zakariya-best-pharmacy-student-abu/ Zakariya is the first graduate of a Nigerian university to earn a McCall MacBain Scholarship for studies at McGill University. She graduated in 2022 from Ahmadu Bello University as the best student in pharmaceutical sciences and is the specialty research team lead at the university teaching hospital.

Friday volunteers with a local charity foundation, counseling patients, and initiated a patient identification scheme for free services. Based on this experience, she started a group raising funds for health-related issues.

Farida also tutored students in the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria and coordinated a cohort of 15 student union leaders interested in entrepreneurship. Through the latter, she helped advocate for a startup bill proposal to the Nigerian government.

As a McCall MacBain Scholar, Farida will pursue a Master of Science in Experimental Medicine at McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with the goal of identifying new cancer drugs.

Farida who is billed to commence her studies in September 2023 has this to say, “Knowing that I get access to mentorship, leadership development programs and a cohort of change-makers with similar visions makes me so excited at the endless possibilities.”
