Though a tree cannot make a forest, there is no doubt a tree with the deepest and wild branches add to the darkness of the forest, on the 5th of June, 2011, the world stopped moving momentarily as revered Comrade Auwal Shanono: one of the tallest Iroko trees in our intellectual forest of Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) was cut down by the cold hands of death in Ibadan.

The indefatigable leader who was born July 1, 1984, was the 34th National President of the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA).

Comrade Auwal Shanono

Shanono and his four colleagues were on their way back from Ile-Ife after a national sensitisation rally on the reduction of maternal mortality (emphasis: Mortality!) when they were ambushed by warring factions of the NURTW members, in Ibadan. His colleagues escaped death by the slimmest of chances.

Until his death he was a 500 Level medical student of the Prestigious and largest University in Sub-saharan Africa, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He has been a quintessential student politician.

Comrade Auwal Shanono had during his lifetime held numerous positions ranging from National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS); Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) of which he was National President and on whose assignment he died); ABU Medical Students Association (ABUMSA); Kano and Jigawa Medical Students Association(KAMSA); National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS); International Federation of Medical Students (IFMSA). Late Shanono was a true definition of Nobility, Dedication, Proven Integrity and Sacrifice.

Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) National Secretariat was named in honor of the Late Comrade (Auwal Shanono).

The entire NiSMA family will live to remember your selfless services and commitment towards Social, Health, Societal, Political and Capacity building.

May Almighty God grant him eternal rest, forgive his sins, reward his good deeds and favor him with paradise.
