Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan is a prominent Nigerian politician and distinguished Abusite who is an incumbent Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Yobe North Constituency and the President of the 9th Nigerian Senate.

Ahmed Lawan was born on the 12th day of January 1959 at Gashua in Yobe State Nigeria. He was born to his mother, Hajia Halima Ali, and to his father, Late Mallam Ibrahim Lawan.

He completed his primary education at Sabon Gari Primary School, Gashua in 1974 and then attended Government Secondary School, Gashua where he got his O’Level in 1979.

He proceeded to the University of Maiduguri where he obtained a Bachelors degree in Geography, in 1984.

Ahmed Lawan obtained a Master’s degree in Remote Sensing from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Doctorate degree in Remote Sensing/GIS from Cranfield University, UK, in 1990 and 1996 respectively.

Lawan had worked in the Yobe state civil service as an Education Officer in the Ministry of Education from 1985 to 1986. He then got a teaching job at the University of Maiduguri, where he lectured for 10 years from 1987 to 1997 before joining politics.

His political sojourn started in 1988 as the pioneer vice chairman of the All Peoples Party (APP) in Yobe state. He thereafter served as the Secretary of the Electoral Committee of APP National Convention in Abuja before contesting for a seat in Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives.

Hon. Ahmed Lawan was elected into the House of Representatives, as a member representing Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency in 1999 where he chaired such committee as House Committees on Education and Agriculture. He spent 8 years in the Federal House of Representatives.

In 2007, Ahmad Lawan was elected a Senator representing Yobe North Senatorial District on the platform of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). He was one of the most vocal voices in the senate and served in various committees such as the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on Constitution Review.

In 2009, as chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, he initiated and sponsored the Desertification Control Commission Bill.

In August 2009, Senator Lawan spoke vehemently against the proposed Kafin Zaki Dam. He submitted that the Tiga Dam and Challawa Gorge Dam had already reduced water flow drastically, and the Jama’are River was now the main source of water in the Yobe River. He said the dams caused intense poverty, increased desert encroachment, migration, and conflicts between arable farmers and herdsmen.

In 2011, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan won a second term as Senator representing Yobe North Senatorial District and was re-elected on the platform of the ANPP.

In the 2015 general elections, he won a third term in office under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He remains an outstanding member of the Senate and was the Majority Leader till the 8th Senate was dissolved.

In 2019, Senator Ahmed Lawan won a fourth term also on the APC platform. He subsequently declared his interest in the Senate Presidency.

After a keenly contested election, Senator Ahmed Lawan emerged Victorious On Tuesday, June 11, 2019, polling 79 votes to defeat Senator Ali Ndume (his main challenger) who polled 28 votes of total 107 votes cast.

Lawan, a Muslim, is married with children and holds the traditional titles of Dan Masanin Bade and Garkuwan Daliban Gamui.

He is a recipient of the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
