The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is a Nigerian law enforcement agency which is saddled with the responsibility of combating financial crimes in the country. It was created by the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo. This was partially in response to pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF), which named Nigeria as one of 23 countries non-cooperative in the international community’s efforts to fight money laundering.[1]

Since it’s creation in 2003, it has had four chairmen. Out of which 3 are graduates of Ahmadu Bello University university Zaria – #Abusites. Only one so far – Farida Waziri is a graduate of University of Lagos.

1. NUHU RIBADU (Adamawa)

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu mni (born 21 November 1960) is a politician, Abusite and retired police officer who was the Chairman of the Petroleum Revenue Task Force and a probably Nigeria most prominent anti corruption official. He was the pioneer Executive Chairman of Nigeria‘s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and first link between ABU Zaria and EFCC. In April 2009, he became a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development.

Mallam Ribadu studied law at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State from 1980 until 1983, receiving a Bachelor of Laws degree. Following a year at the Nigerian Law School, he was called to Bar in 1984. He also earned a Master of Laws degree from the same university. He is a TED Fellow and a Senior Fellow in St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford, UK.

2. IBRAHIM LAMORDE (Adamawa)

Born 20 December 1962 is a Nigerian police officer and #Abusite who was appointed Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 23 November 2011 after chairman Farida Waziri had been dismissed by President Goodluck Jonathan. He was confirmed as Chairman by the Senate on 15 February 2012.

Lamorde who is from Mubi, Adamawa State. Attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating with a BA in Sociology in 1984. He is the only person so far to have headed the EFCC twice

3. IBRAHIM MAGU (Borno)

Born on 5 May 1962 in Maiduguri, Borno State. He attended Maiduguri’s primary school (from 1969 to 1975), Waka Biu’s Secondary School from 1975 to 1980 and Studied at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1982–1986 where he graduated with a BSc. Accounting.

He is the current head of the commission. He was appointed Acting Chairman of the EFCC on 09 November 2015 after the then chairman Ibrahim Lamorde was removed by President Mohammadu Buhari. He served during Nuhu Ribadu’s time at the anti-graft agency and is also credited with part of the success Ribadu recorded in his time

Whatever is your view of their performance, the fact that all of them are from Ahmadu Bello University is a confirmation of the greatness of the institution and #Abusites
