The 2019 national assembly elections were held on February 23, 2019. The 9th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was inaugurated on the 11th of June 2019 and the assembly will run its course until 11 June 2023.

The Nigerian Senate comprised 109 members, three from each of the 36 states of the federation and one from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Out of this number, at least 25 members are distinguished Alumni of Ahmadu Bello University.

Below is a full list of the 25 ABU Zaria Alumni who Served as Senators in the 9th National Assembly.

#1. Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan
9th Nigeria National Assembly: Ahmed Lawan , President of the senate

Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan (born 12 January 1959) is a Nigerian senator who served as the President of the 9th Senate of Nigeria. He represented Yobe North Constituency of Yobe State under the All Progressive Congress (APC). His tenure as a senator started since the 2007 Nigeria general election.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Maiduguri in 1984, a postgraduate diploma degree in Land Surveying from the Ahmadu Bello University, a master’s degree in Remote Sensing from the Ahmadu Bello University, and a Doctorate in Remote Sensing/GIS from Cranfield University, UK, in 1990 and 1996 respectively.

#2. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi

Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (born 10 January 1967) is a Nigerian Politician, and the Senator who represented Niger North Senatorial District of Niger State at the Nigerian 8th and 9th National Assembly. He was the deputy chief whip at the Nigerian 9th National Assembly. He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University in 1992 and went on to study at the University of Calabar 2000;2002, and Ogun State University 2004.

#3. Sen. Binos Dauda Yaroe

Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe was the senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial District of Adamawa State at the Nigerian 9th National Assembly. Binos Yaroe attended the School of Basic Studies of Ahmadu Bello University in July 1975 as a pioneer student of the one-year I.J.M.B. programme.

In September 1975, he was absorbed into the Faculty of Administration, Kongo Campus, A.B.U. Zaria, for the B.Sc. Accounting degree programme. He graduated in June 1978 with Second Class Upper honours.

#4. Mohammed Danjuma Goje

Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje (born 10 October 1952) was a former Governor of Gombe State, Nigeria under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), taking office on the 29th May, 2003. He is now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He studied Political Science and graduated from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

#5. Ibrahim Gaidam

Ibrahim Gaidam is a Nigerian politician who served as Senator of Yobe State East District at the 9th National Assembly. He is a former governor of Yobe State, succeeded by the Former APC National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni on 29 May 2019.

He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1981 and 1983, earning a Diploma in Accountancy. Later he returned to Ahmadu Bello University, earned a BSc in Accountancy Degree in 1990, and became a member of the Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria.

#6. Ibrahim Shekarau

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (born November 5, 1955) was a former Nigeria’s minister of education and two-term Governor of Kano State in Nigeria. He was elected in April 2003 and reelected in April 2007. He is a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC). He was one of the candidates who aspired to become president in the Nigerian general elections of 2011. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1973–1977) where he received a degree in Mathematics/Education.

#7. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe

Senator Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe is a Nigerian medical doctor and politician. On February 23, 2019, Kwara Central Senatorial district election, He was elected Senator for Kwara Central senatorial District defeating the Incumbent Bukola Saraki. Oloriegbe graduated with an MBBS degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria in 1985.

#8. Shuaibu Isa Lau

Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau (born 27 November 1960) is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from Taraba State. He represents Taraba North in the Nigerian 9th National Assembly. Senator Lau is the Chairman of, Senate Committee on Public Procurement.

Senator Isa Lau attended the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1980, and later the faculty of Engineering where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Engineering in 1984.

#9. Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf

Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf (born 2 December 1956) is a Nigerian politician who has been the All Progressives Congress Member of the Senate for the constituency of Taraba Central since 2015. Born in Nguroje, he schooled at Ahmadu Bello University (BSc Economics, 1980) and the University of East Anglia (MA Economics, 1983).

#10. Istifanus Gyang

Istifanus Gyang (born 1964) is a Nigerian senator who is representing Plateau North Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in International Studies in 1986. He also attended the University of Jos finishing with a second degree in law in 2004. He was called to the Nigerian bar in 2007.

#11. Nora Daddut

Professor Nora Daddut is a renowned academic and distinguished Abusite who was elected the first female senator in Plateau State. She won the Plateau South Senatorial bye-election after polling 83,151 votes to defeat her closes rival, George Daika of the PDP with 70,838 votes. The election was held following the death of Ignatius Datong Longjan on February 10, 2020. She obtained her first degree in French in 1976 from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

#12. ABDULFATAI BUHARI

Abdulfatai Buhari (Born in 1965) is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Oyo North senatorial district and Chairman Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime. He attended the University of Ilorin where he studied Business Administration and in 1985 graduated with a BSc in Business Administration.

Senator Buhari then furthered his education to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria where he graduated with a Masters in Business Administration in 1993. In 2009, Buhari obtained a PhD in Public Policy from the University of Abuja.

#13. Muhammad Bima Enagi

Muhammad Bima Enagi (born September 7, 1959) is a Nigerian Politician, and the Senator representing Niger South Senatorial District of Niger State at the 9th National Assembly under the platform of APC. Enagi obtained his degree in Quantity Surveying at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1982.

He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1975–1978), graduating with a Bachelor of Education Degree.

Senator Yakubu Oseni (born 1975) is a Nigerian politician and a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for Kogi Central Senatorial District of Kogi State Nigeria. He was elected in the February 2019 Nigerian general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Senator Useni attended Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. While in his first year in Zaria he bagged the Edith Wetan Award for the Best 100 Level Student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, ABU, Zaria (1997). And in 2001 when he bagged his Economics Degree, he showed academic class as the best graduating student in the Faculty of Social Science.

Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah (born June 2, 1967, in Zuru, Kebbi State) is a Nigerian politician and the Deputy Majority leader in the Nigerian senate. He is the senator representing Kebbi South Senatorial seat in the Senate of Nigeria elected under the All Progressives Congres.

He attended the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and obtained a Bachelor of Law degree in 1985 before proceeding to the Law School in Lagos and was called to the bar in 1986.

#19. Muhammad Adamu Aliero

Muhammad Adamu Aliero (born 1 January 1957) was governor of Kebbi State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He became Senator for Kebbi Central on June 5, 2007. Aliero is also a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

He was admitted into the School of Basic Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, where he enrolled in the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) certificate program. He began undergraduate studies in 1977 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science in 1980.

20. Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi

Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi (born 10 December 1950) is a Nigerian politician and was an associate professor. He is the Senator representing Kebbi North Senatorial District of Kebbi State at the 9th National Assembly. He is Senate Majority Leader of the Nigerian 9th National Assembly.

Yahaya attended the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, from 1970 to 1971 and continued in the same University to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences, and a Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D., in Rural Sociology from 1976 to 1983.

#21. Umaru Ibrahim Kurfi

Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya (born 16 June 1952) is a Nigerian politician who has served in the Senate of Nigeria since 2007, representing the Kano South constituency of Kano State. He is a member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1977. He remained at the university, where he later received a master’s degree in architecture in 1980.

#23. Suleiman Abdu Kwari

He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1984 and also completed his Master’s Degree programme in Business Administration at the same University in 1998.

#25. Senator James Manager
James manager

James Manager is a Nigerian senator of the People’s Democratic Party representing the Delta South Senatorial District of Delta State in the Nigerian Senate. He became a Senator in 2003. Manager has an LLB Hons in Law from Ahmadu Bello University in 1986, then he graduated from the Nigerian Law School in 1987 and he got LLM in Law from the University of Lagos in 1989.
