A student of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria Yunus Ibrahim Hussain has been selected as one of the 30 global young leaders of the world by the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre (NGIC) Baku, Azerbaijan.
The undergraduate student of Agriculture / Veterinary Medicine made history by becoming the first-ever Nigerian youth/Abusite to be selected to join this erudite forum.
The Global Young Leaders Forum who’s aimed to bring together some of the world’s emerging leaders to discuss pressing global issues will include prominent speakers such as Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Co-Chair of NGIC, President of Latvia 1999-2007; Ismail Serageldin, Co-Chair of NGIC, Vice President of the World Bank 1992-2000.
Others include Jeffrey Sachs, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of UN on SDG; Rosen Plevneliev, President of Bulgaria 2012-2017; Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of Mauritius 2015- 2018; Kateryna Yushchenko, Chair of the Youth Programs at NGIC-First Lady of Ukraine 2005-2010, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, 73rd President of the UN General Assembly and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador.
The Forum is a unique gathering of about 20 to 30 diverse leading young leaders from the world’s top scholarship programs and leading industries who have tremendous potential to make positive impacts in the world.
The Program aims to invite two to three representatives from some of the world’s most competitive and selective scholarships, as well as successful young professionals and entrepreneurs. Top scholars tend to socialize within their respective networks.
Who is Yunus Ibrahim Hussain?
Passionate about Volunteering, Economic development, and Social inclusion, Yunus Ibrahim Hussain is a Nigerian-born development advocate for the underserved communities in rural Nigeria.
He has served as a strategic advocate and human resource officer at NO BOX Initiative in Kaduna, before pressing on to pick an appointment as the Kaduna state program coordinator of Eleven Eleven Twelve Foundation (Ibadan).
In 2019 Ibrahim joined Smart Aid Initiative; an organization founded by Fareed Kamal, an undergraduate student of International Studies at Ahmadu Bello University as a monitoring and evaluation officer and later the head of programs.
Yunus is the first Kaduna state advocacy and program director of the Nigeria youth SDGs Network; an alliance of youth-led/focus civil society organizations working together to ensure Nigeria keeps her promise to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both at home and abroad.
Based on his studies of Veterinary Medicine/Agriculture at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Yunus has succeeded in gathering the knowledge and skills needed to work for rural communities.
His research work and special interest in environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and climate change led him into digital climate policy and activism. Past five years, Yunus has been using his voice to speak up against racial discrimination, rural marginalization, climate injustices, and inequalities.
Amidst his studies, he currently works as a junior consultant in the non-profit management industry as one of the multi-stakeholder working group for the United Nation’s IGF Policy Network on Environment. Yunus has received training from renowned global institutions in Poland, U.S, Turkey, Egypt, and Nigeria.
As a result, he has succeeded in leading developmental projects and campaigns, whilst representing the organizations he works/volunteered for at high-level meetings/forums as well as several conferences within and outside the country. His hope and aspiration are to become a valuable asset not just to Nigeria but to the whole world.
