ABU Postgraduate Admission Requirements vary par faculty, department, and course. Although there are general ABU Postgraduate Admission Requirements, such doesn’t cover all. This article explains in detail all the specific requirements for all the postgraduate programmes in the faculty of Administration, ABU Zaria.

The Faculty of Administration situated in the Kongo campus of the University was established in 1967 with the mission of producing highly skilled and intellectual manpower to meet the strategic needs of the nation through the public and private sectors.

It is made up of four (4) departments namely; Department of Accounting, Department of Business Administration, Department of Local Government and Development Studies, and Department of Public Administration.

ABU Postgraduate Admission Requirements - Faculty of Administration
Department of Public Administration, ABU Zaria

As at the time of writing this article, the faculty runs close to twenty Postgraduate programmes. Below is the comprehensive admission requirements for the various postgraduate programmes and courses in the faculty of Administration, ABU Zaria.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ABU POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION 2019/2020

A. After registration, every full-time candidate for the degree of Master shall pursue his/her studies and/or research for not less than eighteen (18) calendar months and not more than twenty-four (24) calendar months before being examined for the degree.

B. After registration, every full-time candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall pursue his/her course work and/or research for not less than twenty-four (24) calendar months not more than thirty-six (36) calendar months before being examined. After registration, each part-time candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall pursue the programme for not less than thirty-six (36) calendar months and not more than sixty (60) calendar months for the degree.

C. After registration, every full-time candidate for the M. Phil shall pursue his/her studies and/or research for not less than twelve (12) calendar months and not more than Eighteen (18) calendar months before being examined for the degree.

D. After registration, every Postgraduate Diploma candidate shall pursue his/her studies and/or research for not less than Twelve (12) calendar months and not more than Eighteen (18) calendar months before being examined for the degree.

Other important Admission Requirements
  • A candidate for Postgraduate studies must have met the normal undergraduate requirements for the corresponding undergraduate programme as stipulated by JAMB. Where not determined by JAMB, at least five relevant O’ level credits or a combination of relevant O’ level credits and A ‘level qualifications such as IJMB, HND, HSC, NCE, etc would be required. In all cases, these must include a credit in O’ level English Language.
  • A holder of Pass Degree OR HND (less than Lower Credit) is not qualified for any Postgraduate programme in ABU.
  • Candidates with 3rd class Degrees can, in some cases, be admitted, provided they possess additional relevant qualifications and/or post-graduation work experience (at least 5 years) acceptable to the University.
  • Candidates applying for a Ph.D. programme must hold a Master’s degree or M.Phil with a research thesis component (not project). Candidates with a CGPA score of less than 3.5 are not eligible for PhD
  • Applicants for PhD programmes are expected to attach a research proposal of not more than 2 pages.
  • Transcript: Candidates should request their former Universities or Institutions, to send their academic transcripts to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, ABU Zaria otherwise their application may not be processed.

In addition to the general admission requirements, several postgraduate programmes have additional requirements and in some cases, candidates are required to write and pass an entrance examination. Below are the specific Postgraduate Admission Requirements for each department and course in the faculty of Administration, ABU Zaria

1.1 DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING

Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and FinancePGDAF

  • Admission Requirement of the Programme: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with at least third class degree from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University, or HND with a minimum of Lower Credit in Accountancy, Business Administration/Management, and Banking and Finance from recognized Polytechnic. Applicants that reach high managerial positions in the financial sector with a good degree in other fields would also be considered.
Masters of Banking and Finance (MBF)
  • Admission Requirements of the Programme: Candidates with at least a second-class degree (Lower Division) in Accounting, Business or Economics from Ahmadu Bello University or any recognized university. Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and finance from Ahmadu Bello University with a minimum of merit.
  • In addition, candidates with HND in Accounting or Banking and Finance or third class degree in Accounting from a recognized Institution or with a Professional qualification from the recognized professional body (i.e. ICAN or ANAN) may be considered.
M.Sc Accounting and Finance
  • Admission Requirement of the Programme: Bachelor of Science at Second Class Upper level and above in Accounting and other eligible disciplines from a recognized University.
  • In exceptional cases candidates with a high Bachelor of Science at Second Class Lower level in Accounting from a recognized University with a minimum of 5 years relevant post-qualification experience and evidence of scholarship.
  • Candidates with MBA/MBF degree (in addition to 1st Degree) in Accounting from a recognized University with a cumulative average of at least 3.5 in a 5.0 point scale or 3.0 in 4.0 point system or an average of B in A-E Scale. In addition, candidates with a good M. Sc degree in Banking & Finance or Economics from a recognized University, however, such candidates will be required to take some prerequisite courses at the appropriate level.
Ph.D. Accounting and Finance
  • Admission requirements of the programme: Candidates with an M.Sc degree in Accounting and Finance from Ahmadu Bello University or any recognized university are admissible into the Programme.
1.2 DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

  • Admission Requirements:
  • A) Five credits at O-Level in not more than 2 sittings including Mathematics and English.
  • A) Bachelor’s degree in any field with at least a Second Class Lower; HND with a minimum of lower credit in management or any management related field plus at least one-year relevant post qualification experience.
  • C) All candidates must have demonstrated adequate intellectual capacity, professionalism, maturity and effective decision – making and problem-solving potentials during the university’s admission test and interview.
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Admission Requirements:
  • A) Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Management with at least a Second Class Lower or 2.40 Cumulative Grade Point Average from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University or PGDM, with at least one year post-graduation qualification.
  • B) Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Management or PGDM with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) or 2.40 Cumulative Grade Point Average from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University plus one-year post-qualification experience, or HND plus NNA, ACA, CIB, ACII.

General Requirements:

A) All candidates must possess the basic university entry requirement of five credit passes including English and Mathematics at the ‘O’ Level, as the basic requirement.
B) All candidates must have a minimum of one year of managerial/administrative experience in addition to performing satisfactorily at the University’s MBA entrance examination.

Specific Requirements for MBA (Regular) Full-Time:

  • A) Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Management or any related field such as Marketing, Banking & Finance, Insurance and or Actuarial Science with at least a Second Class Lower or 2.40 Cumulative Grade Point Average from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University or
  • B) Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) only.

Specific Requirements for MBA (Regular) Part-Time

  • a) Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Management or any related field such as Marketing, Banking & Finance, Insurance and or Actuarial Science and Accounting with at least a Second Class Lower or 2.40 Cumulative Grade Point Average from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University OR
  • b) Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) only.

Specific Requirements for MBA (Special) Part-Time

  • A) Bachelor’s degree in any field of study with at least a Second Class Lower or 2.40 Cumulative Grade Point Average from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University.
  • Candidates with an MBA degree from Ahmadu Bello University or any recognized university are admissible into the M.Sc. Programme. However, candidates with first class degree or second class (Upper Division) in Business Administration or any of the management sciences may be admitted into the programme but would be expected to first complete the requirements of the MBA coursework.
  • B) HND holders in Management or related fields holding professional certificates such as ANAN, CIB, and CA may be considered.
PhD Business Administration
  • Admission Requirement: Candidates with an M.Sc degree from Ahmadu Bello University or any recognized university are admissible into the PhD Programme.
1.3 DEPARTMENT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT STUDIES
Masters of Public Administration (Local Government)
  • Admission Requirements: First Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Public Administration, Business Administration or any Social Science Course. Post-graduate Diploma in Local Government or Public Administration (PGDLG or PGDPA).
Masters in Policy and Strategic Studies
  • Admission Requirements:
  • A) Five 0′ Level requirements with credit in English Language and at least a Pass in Mathematics
  • B) At least a Second Class honors degree in Local Government and Development Studies, or from the Social Sciences, Public Administration and Management Sciences.
  • C) A Third Class honors degree in Local Government and Development Studies (ABU Zaria after obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma.
  • D) Postgraduate Diploma in the Management Sciences, Public Administration and Social Sciences are eligible for admission.
MSc Policy and Strategic Studies
  • Admission Requirements:
  • A) Five O’ level requirements with credit in English Language and at least a Pass in Mathematics
  • B) A Second Class Upper Division in Local Government and Development Studies, Social Sciences and Public Administration from ABU, Zaria and from any other recognized University.
  • C) Professional Masters (MPA, MBA, MA etc.) from relevant disciplines
  • D) Holders of MPA Local Government & Masters in Policy and Development Studies.
Ph.D Local Government
  • Admission Requirements: A). Five O’level requirements with credit in English Language and at least a Pass in Mathematics.
  • B. A Second Class Upper Division in Local Government and Development Studies, Social Sciences and Public Administration from ABU, Zaria and any other recognized University.
  • C) Holders of MPA Local Government & Masters in Policy and Development Studies.
  • D) M.Sc. Policy and Development Studies e. Master of Public Admin (Local Government)
  • E) M.Sc. Political Science, Economics or Sociology.
  • F) Master’s Degree in any other Social Science acceptable to the Postgraduate School of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
  • G). Master of Public Administration with M.Phil
  • H) M.Sc. Public Administration
1.4 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
M. Phil/PhD Public Administration
  • Requirement: candidates must have a minimum of five credits which must include English Language, Economics, Government/History, and Mathematics;
  • Minimum class of First Degree – Must be Second Class Lower (2:2) In Public Administration, Local Government, Economics, Political Science or Sociology;
  • Minimum CGPA in Master’s Degree – must not be less than 3.5 for M.Phil admission, and Minimum CGPA in Master’s degree for Ph.D. admission must not be less than 4.00 in coursework and 60% or B grade in thesis performance.
  • Prospective candidates for M.Phil/PhD in Public Administration must fulfill all the above requirements before they are considered for admission into the programmes.
M.Sc. Public Administration
  • Requirements – candidates must have a minimum of five credits which must include English Language, Economics, Government/History, and Mathematics;
  • Candidate must have a first degree in Public Administration, Local Government or Political Science.
  • Minimum class of Degree: candidate must have a minimum class of Second Class Upper (2: 1) to qualify for admission.
Master in Public Administration
  • Requirements – candidates must have a minimum of five credits which must include English Language.
  • Candidate with first degree and a Class of Second Class Lower (2:2) In Public Administration, Local Government, Economics, Sociology, and Political Science are qualified to apply. Those with Third Class must have at least five years of graduation experience.
  • Candidates with a first degree outside the above-specialized field of studies must have Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration of ABU to qualify for admission.
  • HND holders with a minimum grade of Merit (Lower Credit) must also possess the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration, and have at least two years of graduation experience.
Post graduate Diploma in Public Admin – PGDPA
  • Requirements – candidates must have a minimum of five credits which must include the English Language.
  • A minimum of B.A/B.Sc. from A.B.U. or any other recognized university or polytechnic. However, holders of HND with a minimum of Merit Grade plus a minimum of two years post qualification experience may be considered.
  • Similarly, holders of Advanced Diploma in Public Administration (ADPA) from this Department or a Postgraduate Diploma from a recognized university or polytechnic may also be considered. Note that candidates in both cases must meet the minimum ‘0’ level admission requirements.
