A graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria with username @Abknyt is trending on the micro-blogging site Twitter for posting photos of himself doing a manual job on construction site for #2000/day

In a short twit, the graduate of microbiology who is currently studying for his MSc wrote; “For those of you wey want 2k urgent. I dey site Ooh. Make una come join hand. We need 5 more people.”

The twit which highlights the problem of unemployment in the country went viral and has since garnered tens of thousands of replies with many sharing their own experiences in the job market, relating with his post, and encouraging him.

Not begging online with a sense of entitlement, or scamming people of their hard-earned salary, or doing “runz” on and off social media. I celebrate you, my guy. God will bless you and every hardworking youth out there abundantly

“If our government actually took care of its citizens they wouldn’t be working for 2000 naira ($5) a day or doing scams. Imagine an oil-rich nation with one of the highest poverty and unemployment rates in the world. Even SA with no oil has a way higher minimum wage.” He concluded

Another user call Innocent (@innocent_) who is a mason wrote; “I know how it feels bro. We’re in the same shoes but it is just part of the story we will tell when we get to the top. Don’t give up. This too shall pass… I’m on a site at the moment. Even yet to finish. The rain really disturbed today’s work.”

“which is photography (with my phone) The hashtag #AbknytFlicks got you. I would appreciate your kind gestures in any form of getting a career. For the site, I don’t do it for pay, it was our course to raise mama a house. Thank you so much.”

Unemployment in Nigeria

Youth unemployment is a big problem in Nigeria which is Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy. In Nigeria, nearly a quarter of the population is out of work and 20 percent is underemployed.

For young people aged 15 to 35, the figures are grim: 55.4 percent of them are without work. Creating jobs has been one of the key issues discussed across all platforms including social media as highlighted in the conversation above.

Being young in Nigeria is “very challenging”, explains Andrew Nevin, advisory partner and chief economist at PwC Nigeria in an interview with Aljazeera.

“Graduates from university have a great deal of difficulty in getting established. People that didn’t go to university who should be getting vocational training are not getting it. They’re not getting into formal employment. Given the scale of Nigeria, it’s a challenge not just for Nigeria, but for Africa and the whole world.”

There are systemic problems behind unemployment, Nevin points out.

“Oil over the last 30 years in this country has meant people have taken their eye off other industries, there’s a lack of diversification that we have. The good news is that everyone recognizes it, and they recognize it’s a crisis … People are discussing youth unemployment, the need for youth to be employed to have something gainful to do.”
