APPLY: 2022 EPFL Swiss Government Scholarships for Foreign Students
The Swiss Government Scholarship is a limited number of grants to foreign students (3rd cycle students: predoctoral (after MA) doctoral or postdoctoral research) wishing to do part of their training at a Swiss university through the Federal Commission for Scholarships.
EPFL offers a limited number of fellowships at master’s level to students with outstanding academic records. Some fellowships are funded by EPFL directly while others are funded through partnerships with foundations or private companies. Anyone applying to an EPFL master’s program is eligible.

Scholarship Details:
The selection of candidates and the granting of the fellowships are based on the evaluation of the academic records of the candidates.
The fellowship committee, comprising members of the EPFL sections representatives of the Associate Vice-Presidencies for Student Affairs and Outreach as well as for Education and representatives from other school services, selects the candidates.
The selection process for the Swiss Government Scholarships is very competitive, only about 3% of the master students receive such financial support.
Scholarship Duration and Reward
- The Scholarship period will run between September 2020 and September 2021 for the September set and;
- January 2021 to January 2022 for the January set.
- The scholarship will provide a full tuition fee waiver for the year, plus a stipend of £8,000 which will be paid over 12 months.
- Applicants who can evidence their refugee status will be considered a priority group, however the University may extend the invite to apply to further applicants.
Required Documents
To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;
- Your resumé (curriculum vitae).
- Copy of your University degree(s), if already available.
- Complete transcripts from each university you have attended.
- A statement of purpose (1000 words max).
- The contact details of three academic referees, who will each be asked to produce a recommendation letter for you (except for holders of an EPFL Bachelor’s degree, and those who hold a Bachelor’s degree from ETH Zürich or a Swiss university or FHS/HES and are applying for a Master’s program in the same field of study).
- Your identity card or passport.
Extra documents, such as TOEFL or GRE scores, research publications, or other portfolios of your previous work, are welcome but not compulsory. We will only consider documents uploaded in your online application form (no documents sent by postal mail).
If the master at EPFL is a second master’s degree, candidates are not eligible for an excellence fellowship.
All documents should be in English, French, German, or Italian. Please join a legalized translation of all documents in another language.
Method of Application
All candidates should apply via the same online form to a master’s program by April 15, 2022.
Scholarship status
After a first screening by the sections, the excellence fellowships Committee awards the fellowships. Selected candidates will be notified by mid of June 2022.
The application process is done entirely online, in French or English, from mid-November to December 15th or from December 16th to April 15th. Documents sent by email or fax will not be considered.
